Radio 2 this morning, every news feature mentioned a submarine drone looking at the wreck of the titanic, and reporting that the handrails have come off….

Shock! Horror! Metal rusts after spending over 100 years submerged in salty water!

In other news, The grass is green, the sky is blue and Oasis concerts are over hyped.

What is this Titanic "thing" anyway? People buy memorabilia, visit the museum...all to "celebrate" a disaster of engineering and loss of lfe.
The Vasa museum in Stockholm is another example. Walk in the door and you see this massive wooden ship...and even those with no nautical knowledge at all say "Crikey, that'd never work!" I was only there for a long weekend and managed to avoid the Abba museum despite my wife and daughter thinking that might be good fun. Nice city, good parking, a brilliant Segway tour and at least 4 genuine tapas places near the hotel, so not a bad trip for me!

Oasis...nah, not for me...but my daughter's friend got £300 for her spare bedroom for one night from 2 fans.

It just needs leaving to rest and give its nutrients to the sea. Nothing more lovely and fitting really imo. It's only greed wanting it displayed for a ticket fee in a museum.

The Titanic is the same as all other shipwrecks that are immersed in salty seawater it is inevitable that the corrosion will eventually cause it to fall apart so it is no real surprise, then again that dodgy Titan submersible last year may have caused the damage who knows
Some wrecks are thought to corrode quicker if they are regularly dived and are subjected to the air that the diver breathes out being trapped in the wreck

Never thought of that but it totally would oxidise more with more oxygen! I know most they'll breathe out will be carbondioxide they'll be well trained before going that deep, but a good percentage can still be oxygen if your levels are right in your blood. (Learning about that now I run at 82% as 'normal')

Breathed out air contains more oxygen than you think, of the approximate 20% oxygen in air the human body normally only uses around 4% so there is still quite an amount left when breathed out if you think about it that is why mouth to mouth resusitation works
When Halon gas was banned for fire suppression systems the alternative that came to market was Depleted Air this is air where the oxygen level is reduced to about 9% and CO2 is raised, fire / combustion is not supported at oxygen levels below 10% so when the system is operated in a fire the drop in oxygen quickly extinguishes the fire, the other advantage is anyone in the room can still breathe unlike Halon gas with the panic to get out the room when the Halon gas pre alarm went off
