Anyone used a chaser on lathe work, I have a feeling it would splinter and crack the length of the lathe strips, perhaps a 4 inch angle grinder with a thin disc would be better
any ideas

agree with guitar man. fish cable behind laths. cutting them weakens the wall.

Cut the lath and you'll have a chase that's about 2 foot wide, once all the plaster has dropped off.

A lath and plaster wall is usually fastened to at least 3x2 studs

This a cottage built in the late 17th century, precious few building regs have been adhered to since, So I am weighing my options as to how best to proceed ,lath there may be how far off the original boulder wall it is may vary, it could be flush in one part and arm deep in the next so chasing a channell seemed the best option however ??

Yes, I've used a thread chaser on both woodworking and metalworking lathes loads of times. :joker: But I don't think that was what you meant.

As others have said a reciprocating multi cutter, like a Fein Multimaster, is probably the best choice. If you don't have one a jigsaw or 1/4" router will work, just not so neatly and it's more messy. Don't be tempted to use a spiral cutter, like a Rotazip, because they tend to burn out their bits on the hardwood laths.

reciprocating saw on low speed or skill saw 10mm at a time - would be my choice.
