hello
quick question, can i make a wander cable up out of a extention lead for example? how do you guys do it? i cant pay out ÂŁ80 for the official extension reel type! its far too expensive.
cheers mw

To make a cheap and perfectly acceptable system buy a cheap 5m cassete extension reel, and take out the cable and replace with your single - will easily take 50m of single and works out about ÂŁ70 cheaper:)

Can I ask what a wander lead is?
It just a long version of a test lead you plug into your meter with is mainly used for testing remote gas and water bonding for continuity as well as R2 readings if you choose to take that reading as oppose to R1+R2, the leads are usually tri-rated for extra flexibility and regular use but can be expensive.

Perfectly happy with a roll of 4mm earth, zeroed works a treat!

And since the original post I think the wander lead is over the ÂŁ100 now.....Still looks Gay when my mate uses his nice shinny lead!!!!

i made one up with an extension cassette bought from morrisons. a few mtrs of singles and a couple of ends from rs. does the job for e tenth of the price and a hell of a lot cheaper

years ago we used to attach a wander lead(4mm or 6mm singles) to the main incoming earth, measure the resistance of the lead, then take the lead to wherever you wanted to test, deduct the resistance of the lead, your left with your Zs, this was before R1 & R2 was introduced.

Its just an extension lead for your tester... connect one end to the MET and the other to one of your tester leads.... null out the lead resistance and away you go. used for R2 earth bonding tests...

Good point, they do look a bit 6mm-ish when you mention it, and that is not going to last long enough for a D63 to trip! It might, on a good day...
