hi, heres my situation:

I have just left the Army after 7.5 years as a royal signals electrician (don't let the name fool you, the job basically involved maintenance of batteries, maintenance of generators which was mostly mechanical, putting up tempory power & light systems) and would like to start a career as an electrician, I have the following qualifications already; 17th Edition, Inspecion and testing, Certificate for domestic installers+ Part P, PAT. also before joining the army i started an electrical apprenticeship but got fired after the first year. from the first year of the apprenticeship i have learned alot and i have a good electrical knowledge base but overall i lack practical experiance and confidence.

Today i had a rep from T4TS come round and try to sell me one of their courses (ÂŁ4900 if you pay upfront) which would get me C&G 2330 and garantee a work placement at the end of my training to gain NVQ level 3 and get "fully qualified"

now at the time i was initially put off because i would have to go over the things i have already done, and i would not get money knocked off despite having done a fair bit of it already. then after he went i did alot of searching online and found alot of negative stuff about the company, which put me off even more.

the thing i'm most sceptical is about T4TS is their claim to garantee you a job placement locally at the end. how can they do this? and if they didn't get me a placement i'd be ÂŁ5k down and still effectively in the same boat as i am now, plenty of certificates but no practical experiance!

i'm now thinking it would be better to do G&G 2330 at a college (i've read you can do that on here, but not sure which colleges do it. i checked with my local college a while back and they did not offer any courses like that?) and then try and get a work placement and get the NVQ L3 signed off. christ even if i don't get the NVQ L3 done atleast i would be getting practical experiance.

any help/comments appreciated

yep, i'm defo not going down the T4TS route anymore! far too much bad feedback about them for me to fork out ÂŁ5k now, i'd probably be better off working for free as an electricians mate i'd probably learn more

now i just need to find where i can do 2330 at a college?

today i enquired at my local college about the 2330 electro technology course they are doing, turns out they do one after all!

they said it would take1 year to complete full time, longer than i thought tbh. i have applied for it, awaiting an interview with a tutor to discuss if it would be right for me.

ExArmy,

The 2330 L2 is 1 year full time. You will also need the L3 which is another year.
Are you saying in your first post that you already have the 17th and 2391 testing?
If that is the case won't they let you on the nvq 3 with those two?

yes thats correct, i got 17th edition whilst in the army and i just completed the 2391 this year as part of my resettlement training. it was a 1 week course, quite hard only about half the students passed most of them gave up on day 2.

I do not have a clue about the NVQ, I phoned the college and asked for more info, the girl on the phone just said" if you are interested in the course apply online and we'll get you an interview sorted asap" and then i can have a chat with a tutor about my situation.

is it possible to go onto NVQ L3 like that? if it is then that would make things alot easier. but what i'm worriied about is if i go onto the NVQ3 and get that signed off and then try and get a job somehwere else and they say "you haven't done this bit etc... you can't have the job as you are not fully qualified!"

Just had a quick glance at your qualifications and they seem very good. Your main issue is experience. But you have the advantage that unlike, maybe Damon iin this thread, you can aim for domestic commercial, and industrial work for experience. You are not limited. Did you get formal apprenticeship papers? If so you should not need the NVQ3. If I were you I think I would check out the JIB website to get a grading with them. In the mean time try all manner of small medium and large electrical companies. Specialist companies ie machine movers (Beck and Pollitzer). Explain your situation wanting to gain experience. You should not pay ÂŁ5000for addition courses you do not need. Use the ÂŁ5000 to subsidise yopurself whildt gaining experience

I hope this helps

i never completed the apprenticeship that I started, i have some paperwork which basically shows that i attended there for a year and a certificate from college which shows that i passed all the stuff i did there (National Certificate).

I am currently applying for a JIB card, as i see in alot of job adverts it says "must have CSCS card" so i was just going to get a labourers card for that reason. i'm not sure how the grading thing works, should i just send off all my certificates with a form and see what grade they give me? thing i'm struggling with is section 10 on the form, "employer's or sponsor endorsement and reccomendation". i am currently unemployed, and i can't find anybody who is going to reccomend me for the grade of electrician

Was you a signalman in the army? If so surely you can get somebody who was commanding to vouch for you was a signalman and what tasks you were performing. Put the information together that you have and see if you can delve back to when you were in the forces to get any additional information. I thought the forces kept lots of documentation. See what you can find and which commanding officer will validate your skills. The JIB do cross reference from all industries, mine was mining and was not an easy fit. Also what rank were you? See C&G's I think LCGI or one of the similar levels.

Anyway, regards
