Gents, a client of ours have informed me that they have just a second serious fire in three weeks at a consumer unit in one of their chalets. Following investigation by the Fire Officer it has been found to be the result of a faulty Wylex MCB, the same model and spec that caused the first fire on a seperate consumer unit. I will post an ELECTRIUM warning notice when I figure how to attach files onto threads using my iPhone.
The issue appears to be with models of 6A, 10A& 16A MCB's in the Crabtree/Wylex/Volex names.
I will upload series numbers shortly.
The manufacturer has acknowledged the fault and are carrying out a product recall.

same thing. it was in 2011 they first started the recall. problem is that some installers have gone out of business/moved/ not heard about it. there's probably a few thousand of them dodgy MCB still in service. only comes to the surface when smoke starts pouring out of the CU.

To be fair, Paultrim, I guess this is as a result of the product recall that Electrium carried out in 2010.
If you were in the industry then it would have been hard to miss as the information was plastered over every wholesaler, on most industry forums etc.
Did you not review all your installs to determine if you had installed suspect items?
Or is this a recent installation??

Here's the notice http://www.mcbexchange.co.uk/electrium/RecallAdvertWeb.jpg

should have been. i have 1 site left with suspect MCBs. have made 4 bookings with tenant to inspect and rectify if required. 4 visits, no-one in. what the f*** do you do with that?

To be honest I get the impression that a lot of these product recalls are nothing more than damage limitation exercises designed by lawyers so if someones house does urn down or people are killed because of their cr*p design and equally cr*p quality control they can just stand there in court and shrug their shoulders whilst saying they did everything they could your honour.....honest we did.

I am not an installer. I have been a member of IET since '09 and nothing was mentioned in Wiring Matters or their monthly subscriptions.

Quality everywhere is dropping and prices are rising. Shoddy product and quality control practices, what do you expect.
