What are some of the options available to progress within the electrical/construction industry?

If I could do some evening courses what would you recommend? Im open to any sort of advice, so far I was thinking perhaps doing some electronics courses? But not sure of what my options are, in terms of how I can progress and essentially make some big money.

Nearly finished my apprenticeship, been working on big industrial sites most of the time, was a late starter at 20 but always been working on building sites.

Im not entirely sure whta I want to do exactly as I dont what oppertunities there are, but I know Im not interested in design.

Im fairly versatile and all I need is some career suggestions. I have thought about commisioning, but what else is there? What is difficult to get into, and what are easier options? Sorry if its a bit vague...

Thanks

I'm told that being a commercial/industrial testing operative is a good career to get into. Though you will have to know your stuff!! Being from an industrial background, you will know the type of testing i'm talking about. Mainly on the main and sub-main HV/LV switchboards, distribution transformers, the protective relays, etc, etc.... Worth a look into i think...

Thanks Engineer54 (a bit late i know)

I just wanted to know if anyone else could add anything, now my company are basically saying to me where do you want to be in 10 years, I dont have a clue and theyv'e said they will quite happily put me on any course I want (i didnt expect this) and so want to grab this oppertunity, any and all advice is very welcome. Thanks in advance.

The really massive money is overseas mate. Think where there's oil there's a need. Usually companies ask for an HNC or HND minimum, If you have the guts for it my brother is working in Iraq earning silly amounts but his camp regularly comes under RPG attack

You say you work on big sites well theres a starter I served my time as a commercial and industrial spark Thatcher came to power I had just wired up a fire alarm a guy came on site to commission it so I thought he has got a good number I spent the next 2 years in Fire and Intruder alarms I then progressed to HVAC and BMS controls the Facilities maintenance and then through lifestyle change running a small business doing domestic repairs. Remember one thing though you need to be focused it will not land on your lap you need to ask questions and even self learn because the more strings to your bow the more you wil stay in employment

Thanks Engineer54 (a bit late i know)

If your company is openly willing to sponsor you through any course of your choice, then you must be doing something right , and it has been noticed by those that matter. This is a golden opportunity for you, grab it with both hands, and even your teeth if need be ...lol!!

My suggestion is HND, as a pass with distinctions, is a recognised equivalent to year 1 of a degree course. Not sure about how things work in the UK these day's, but if Sandwich Degree courses are still available, then this route will be even better for your future career...
