Wee kitchen question

T

ThreePhased

Hello folks,
I have been looking through BS7671, the OSG, the Wheatfield Guide, the building regs, and various internet resources trying to find out the answer to this question: what is the the minimum distance a surface (not mechanically protected in steel conduit) T&E cable and/or wiring accessories such as hob or oven flex outlets etc should be from below the underside of a kitchen worktop? i think it should be at least 50mm (2 inches in old money) below. All kitchen circuits are separately RCD protected.
Ta for any words of wisdom....

PS my first post here so go easy!

I would think as long as the outlet is atleast 450mm from the finished floor surface you will be within Approved Document M Regulations (access and use of buildings). However, this height is only a requirement on 'new builds', not 're-wires'.

See page 137 of the IEE Electricians Guide to the Building Regulations.

SMB,
Yes it is more than 450mm above finished floor level! The top of the hob cable outlet (surface box screwed to the wall) is 52mm below the lower side of the worktop and accessed via a kitchen cupboard unit, so it's presence is not immediately obvious. I think I'll fit a suitable piece of steel (e.g. unused gland plate) under the worktop, just in case.
