Hi I did the 17th edition exam at the start of the year and I passed . What am I allowed to do in electrics? Also what course should I progress onto. And be gentle as I'm new :) cheers

Emmm, ok let's put it this way. You don't need any qualifications to be able to call yourself an electrician! But let's say you complete a house rewire you won't be able to sign it off and notify it to the lbc because you can't get scheme membership without a certain level of quals. If you make a mistake and someone is injured by your install and you don't have any quals you will end up in court and sued for all you have. The 17th ed is the book they will through at you.................... If you want to get a job as a sparky you need quals, get yourself to college and do the 2330 level 2 or/and AM2 or the nvq3 if you are in electrical employment atm. Passing the 17th ed exam doesn't make you a sparky, I could sit down with my wife for an hour before the exam and teach her how to pass it with a good grade!

I'm running my own building firm . I hate college but looks like I'll have to go back. Most of the electrics is pretty much just not being stupid. Common sense. I do get what u mean and I don't wanna ever put anyone in danger. Thanks for the advise . Better book a course. But as I'm working and doing very minor elec stuff at work is there any fast track?

In your situation and what your trying to achieve so you can carry out small electrical work within your building firm (i assume domestic) you should call the scheme providers napit, elecsa, nic and find out their minimum requirements for a "domestic installer". Then check out course providers like the ones that advertise on this forum or a local college/learning center. Good luck with it all, as you see its not as straight forward as it should be.

Well that seems to sum up the electrical industry as it stands.

Thanks :) it does seem a bit of a mess . Gas safe seems a bit more together. I always assumed nic was best ? I can see why u guys get peed off with total noobs calling themselves sparkys. But untill they change things .......

The reason it's a mess is that the authorities have introduced additional regulations in an attempt to reduce the risks posed by unqualified, untrained and inexperienced electricians working in domestic premises. These new regulations are difficult to police and most consumers are unaware of them. It appears that most domestic electrical installers have now accepted these regulations for better or worse, but some have not. The argument continues....
