What are skids?

I heard my friend talking about an upcoming job at a harbour working on skids? Anyone have any idea what they are? He says it will involve compex work ie. explosive atmospheres?

The only skids/spiders that I worked with were small platforms that had ball bearing spheres on them. You would put one of them under each corner of a large and heavy piece of equipment such as a Transformer of generator and the skids/spiders would allow you to move the equipment into awkward places where a pallet pump truck or a forklift could not get access to

Thought they were a band of 70/80s, lead singer Stuart Adamson pre Big Country, only song of note "Working hard for the Yankee dollar".

ive worked on skids before, but these were for a power station. water treatment or chemical dosing equipment was all mounted on one frame, and lifetd into position, and we would install cables and contaiment to it, and the fitters would pipe it. theseself contained bits of equipment, and the frame were known as skids.

I couldve easily predicted some of those sarcastics answers guys... must do better! ;)

My research has found that they are som sort of base with a steel frame that is used to mount any sort of equipment or plant so it can be easily moved around and manouvered in awkward places, usually for offshore installations? Am I close?
