I'm surprised at that shift duration, i didn't think you were allowed by law to drive anywhere near those sort of durations. I thought that was one of the reasons they had those tacho things in the cab's???

I think it all depends on exactly what you're doing and what bit of sparky world you live in. For example, those that work full-time for commercial-based companies (probably) manage to keep a fairly sane 5 days 8-4 type of routine, whereas those who are self-employed and do whatever the last phone call said probably do in excess of 60-70hrs/wk by the time all the paperwork etc is done. It's also difficult if you're on a house bash as by nature there are many times when you can't leave the job until its finished or it's not safe.

That being said, I know some blokes who only work a day or two a week and spend the proceeds on the golf course the other three (lucky them!!!)

I'm self employed and it varies.

I'm coming up to having worked every day for the last 6 weeks doing between 12 and 4 hour days. Prior to that, I was working "normal" hours and taking weekends off.

If you then throw in admin, banking, cleaning the van, sorting your tools and materials that adds a few hours to your working week.

Engineer54 we do have those tacho things in our cabs yes but the regulations mean we could work as many as 6 15 hour shifts in one week! Drive time is restricted though it's normally only the container lads doing them hours as they get loads of waiting around on the job. No social life, crap pay(£7-8 ph) lack of parking facilities and toilets etc lots of broken homed because of it all while being treated like **** as everyone hates us can you see why I'm re-training now? :D

Are they all paid hours though or are you paid for 45 say, and the rest is running round in the van sorting materials etc? Are you happy with your e weekly pay after working such long weeks?

the only weeks I have earnt a winning wage was when I got up at 5, was on the job by six, and left at 9 pm, in between I did the same as running a marathon. then repeated 5 days,

I was well into 4 figures profit for the week but was hard

thats physical hours worked 37.5 normal, the rest call outs and overtime at time/half,double time, can get very happy sometimes when payslip drops on the mat,i work in fire/security industry so long hours are the norm really, can take its toll tho ie your constantly knackerd.:sleep1:

I *TRY*:juggle2: and stick to 7-6 Mon - Fri, with a Sat shift when it's bonkers.

The grief I get from 'er indoors' isn't worth the money more hours brings. Got to leave time for moving papers around the desk too.:ack2:

In any working day the maximum amount of driving permitted is 10 hours...this means being on duty (whether driving or otherwise) for anyone who employs him as a driver. This includes all periods of work and driving, but does not
include rest or breaks. Employers should also remember that they have additional obligations to ensure that drivers receive adequate rest under health and safety legislation.

Self Employed , so a normal week for me is roughly 45-60 working hours depending on how busy we are , try to forget the hours i do for paperwork at home on an evening or weekend!!.

Dom, do yourself a favour and stop trying to be a know it about **** all ;)
We drive to eu regs in this country, the domestic rules you're pointing out only apply to a very small number of uk HGV drivers.
Try to find the facts next time to stop you looking such a numpty :D
I'm not going to explain unless its absolutely neccessary as it's off topic, in interested to know what I'm letting myself in for if in the future i am fortunate enough to gain employment after training. Tar.

Self employed..... between 20-40 week + paperwork 5-7 hours a week

No Saturdays (unless totally in the sh!*) anymore done my fair share of them, along with enough stints of 2 weeks of 12/14 hour days

Much happier working for myself earn same money or more for half the hours that i used to do.

38 hours paid a week, that'll do me!

Did that for 15 years, and don't get me wrong it was alright, but then went self employed ....a few years back(!). And the thought of it (working for one place each and every day) makes me shudder. Couldnt do it. Even if times were hard.

IN FACT

just been offered a job, not looking for one, was just offered out of blue, which in these times is a massive compliment whichever way you look at it. But just couldn't do it. Driving to one place then being told "yeah, forget that, need you here now". Too old. Ahhhh Cannae be doing wiv it laddie

would make a good thread, the benefits of guaranteed work/pay or self employed

I own a small company, Monday to Saturday inclusive I'm normally in the office sometime between 5 and 5.30am. I can miss the traffic at that time and I can get more done between 5am and 8.30am when everyone else rolls in because the phone's not ringing and I'm not getting interrupted every ten minutes. I usually leave around 7pm, sometimes later if I'm busy. Sunday is my day off, I usually sleep in till 8 and spend the day with the family. I draw a decent salary but if you worked out the hourly rate I could probably earn more if I worked in big industry....plus I'd have shorter hours and a lot less gray hairs.

Mondays 5.5 hours travel, 9 hours onsite, 2 hours evening paperwork.
Tuesdays - Thursdays 12 hours onsite, 2 hours evening paperwork.
Fridays 8.5 hours onsite, 5.5 hours travel.
Saturdays Off
Sundays 2 hours evening paperwork.

Total 88.5

I must be mad

friday 2hrs drive 12hr shift 2hrs drive home carlisle 16hrs 14paid
but next week was 3hr travel monday 10hrs each day (Paid 12) 3hr travel friday
then the next week was 8-10hr days nothing special
average over month 50hrs a week some anything over 50 attracts a bonus of£1 P/H :D

My record would be 38Hrs in one shift. It was a major breakdown. Forget having regular hours whether you go in the industrial or domestic! You can always chuck the phone out of the window!

god how I miss those"call outs" always when the rugby ,F1 ,Footy just got to the nail biting bit Or the steak youd been smelling had just been put down or The wife decided "your gettin it whether you want it or not" these are all triggers for the phone to ring with the CANT WAIT call outs

Surely call outs mean more money though? It seems on hand a lot of members on this board say there's no money in this game, but then it seems a lot are working excess hours due to call outs outside of the usual working week so surely that means the wages must be better then average? Or else what's the point? I know I'm judging this based on a little bit of info in the scale of the industry but it still confuses me. I'm just about to leave the house for a 13.5 hour shift at royal mail :( zzzzZZZZZ

Yea but your forgetting call outs that may be still under warranty and the electrician has to visit the customers house probably just to switch a circuit breaker back on!

when i did my level 2 2330, i did 4 days at college tuesday to friday. I then did 3x10 hour night shifts friday, saturday and sunday. it was about 74 hours including travelling to college. in my 2330 level 3 i did wednesday to friday in college and friday, saturday nights. When you go for apprenticeships after your 2330, ensure they know exactly how hard you worked to get your qualifications. Employers love it because youve earnt your qualifications and sacrificed so much to get them. It shows drive, ambition and dedication. i made sure with every interview i went to (and i even had it on my cv) that they knew all about my 74 hour weeks.
