I am having trouble finding out what electrical work a domestic installer cannot do in a home. basically i am trying to find out the difference between a fully qualified electrician and a humble domestic installer.

am i correct in thinking that the part p and domestic installer qualifications were designed for tradesmen such as bathroom fitters, tilers etc who may occasionally have to work with electrics e.g. installing a shower, in the bathroom. or have i just insulted all domestic installers on this forum?

any links or advice would be much welcomed

domestic installer , member of a scam, can legally do any work in a domestic situation. whether he's competent is a different kettle of fish.

There a 2 types , A & B scope . B type registered installers can only extend existing circuits while A type can install new circuits & consumer units etc , as for if they are any good then ask former clients . type A are also QS accredited and can design circuits

thank you chaps.

i have been thinking of retraining and becoming a fully qualified electrician. i was under the impression that going down the part p domestic installer route would be a good way for me to gain experience and progress my career. bearing in mind i need to make a living somehow whilst i qualify.

you would not be a qualified electrician by a long way, no matter what these training providers tell you. you would be an inexperienced domestic installer, after paying £5000 ish for the course, you then need to spend about £2000 on tools, buy a van, get PL insurance, then find that the magic " earn 50K a year" is more like 5K after expenses, you'll find that industrial work is a closed door, then wonder why you spent all that money.

thanks for your honesty telectrix,

i recently lost my job in education so i am used to glass ceilings and nepotism.

my family are landlords as well as their friends and colleagues so i would have the opportunity to gain some experience in their properties.

ideally i would like to gain a skill that would allow me to eventually go self employed doing only domestic work.
