During thunder and lightnening what is the exact reason for lights dimming, flickering and cutting out momentarily?
I have read a few reasons on the web such as -
Lightning strikes a wire, the protective circuitry on the power line sees this as a short circuit, and disconnects the wire to stop it from getting damaged. Since we know that most of these are caused by lightning strikes, which pass in a fraction of a second, they are programed to switch the line back on a fraction of a second later.
Relays switch power from one station to another to compensate for surges or shortages and protect the system.
Trees touch the lines causing it to ground the power.
What is the actual reason?
