I use grey.

Brown for switched live or L1
Black for Auxiliary live or COM
Grey for Neutral or L2

Then in the switch you'd have 2 browns in L1, a blue and grey (both sleeved brown) in L2, and a black in COM.

It is now recommended that grey be used for neutral. However, if you are connecting up something to the other end of an installed cable then obviously don't assume that this recommendation is used by everybody.

They should never have changed the 3 phase colour coding's in the first place. And this is one instance where it would have been advisable to of had the Europeans adopt OUR system of phase colours.... No possible chance of miss identification of colours in bad or less than ideal lighting conditions with the bright Red/Yellow/Blue!!.... lol!!!

It seems most of Europe still use them anyway.

think it's only the UK that use these stupid colours anyway. we didn't harmonise with napoleon or hitler, why the hell did we bow down to the faceless pratts in brussels?

i use black as common, brown and grey as strappers. just because i used to use yellow for common, and black replaced yellow.

If using all three cores (eg: 2 way lighting), I do the same.

This is the best method, as the conductors carrying current are directly parallel to each other and will not cause any interference with other services.

For Neutral, I always use Grey as we are supposed to be de-neutralising Black.

With regards, to phase coulours, I thought most of Europe use Brown/Black/Black? We introduced Grey as we prefer to identify all three phases.
