Hi all,
sorry you've probably heard this a million times but I'm looking at getting into the domestic electrician industry.
i am currently engineering and have been for a number of years but am looking for a career change.
i have been looking at the various qualifications required but there seems to be a lot to choose from.
can anyone give me an idea of the mandatory qualifications required for the job, or where to start.
also any good literature I could start reading.
cheers Dean.

you have picked the worst possible trade to try and enter in a recession. 50% of joe public thinks they can do it themselves, 45% know someone who thinks he can do it, leaving 5% that call in a professional spark. thats roughly 750.000 customers for 350,000 qualified sparks. so 2 and a bit each.

Hi you have 2 main choices the first is you become a sparkys mate and go to college for 5 years + on **** money to maybe get ok money one day, or you pay a **** load of money and do a 5 week course. We are all a bit disillusioned with our trade at the moment as these 5 week courses have flooded our trade with very under qualified people. I will not lie, I love it and I am domestic (some of the guys on here would rather set their eyes on fire than do domestic) but think very hard before leaving your job etc it is cut throat town out here at moment and experience and skill seem to count for nothing. Good luck in whatever you do college needs to be your first call.

Look guys I appreciate your replies, but there seems to be a lot of negativity.
im not on here to get told how crap these 5 week courses are having not even asked about them !!
I'm not a new kid on the block and like I said have engineering background mainly aircraft but was looking for a career change.
if this is he sort of reply you get in this section of the forum you may as well close it.
anything constructive appreciated.

electrical installation is your first port of call, book wise you want the 17th ed regs and on site guide (you will need for course, our bible) sorry to be so pessimistic:oops:

The lads are not bring negative, they're being realistic. If you have engineering skills, approach factories ect and head down the maintenance route, and see if they will sponsor you to do ONC/HNC. I personally wouldn't touch domestics if I can avoid it, it's far too much work for not enough pay. I'm not prepared to drop my standards to compete for work. Working for a company doing industrial installation, repair and maintenance suits me.
