Hi,

I am a qualified electrician with C&G 236 part 1 and 2 (old part A and B certificate) returning to the profession after 10yrs break due to redundancy. I am trying to go self employed as an domestic electrician. I have recently passed my 17th edition and Part P exams.

Question:
Is there anything else I need to do legally and would I be allowed to self certify work?

I am not quite sure what else is required, can someone let me know. or if there is a document of web site that explains what is required.

Hoping you can help.

im having some problems with this. To become an nic domestic installer, you have to show them 2 jobs to assess, well, im not sure if im talking noncence but how can you do 2 jobs then certify them...without being n.i.c domestic installer approved spark??

I am sure that the more experienced electricians then myself can anser better then me but my understanding is that you do not have to be registered to conduct the work. You must however be a "Competant Person" which is where it gets vague.

If you are not registered then you need to contact Building Control directly and inform them both BEFORE starting the work and AFTER completing the work. They may wish to come out and inspect the work at your expense, they may also wish to "Take action" if they are not satisfied:confused:

Looking forward to seeing other responses to affirm/correct my understanding.

Sign up with Elecsa, keep your notifiable jobs until you are passed off, then notify the work through the website once you get your password. Assessor will be Ok with this, mine was 4 years ago. Explain to customer that you are awaiting registration but issue EIC or whatever as required. They can contact Elecsa to confirm your story.

Im not aware of anyone that has failed an assessment with any of the part P schemes for failing to notify building control, thankfully the assessor lives in the real world.

you need to register with competant person scheme. NICEIC Elecsa Napit ECA etc
not sure the others but NIC require at least the 17th edition or another suitable qualification
you show them 2 jobs, one full scop one part scope
1 can be in your own home, so say do the full scope job there, this means has to be a new circuit from board
part scope can be a spur or adding a 2 way to a light via 3 core to another light switch
you test both the jobs and show the inspector your test sheets and they quiz you and make you perform tests, you have to show lots of docs including proof of public liability insurance
you are MEANT to notify the full scope job but the inspector doesnt ask for proof of this when he shows up
then your in and you get the van sticker in the post
