Hi guys, I've been investigating this for a while now but don't seem to have a definitive answer.

If someone in Scotland was getting electrical work done on the heating system of their property (changing the programmer etc), what would they need to look for to find a competent person without excluding decent electricians.

From what I can see as long as an electrician is registered to either NICEIC, SELECT or has a SJIB card are they the only requirements you'd need to see?

Thanks in advance!

You could ignore the NICEIC and SELECT registration, that will have little validity, if they have an SJIB card then they should be competent electricians, however whether they are competent at heating control (which is slightly outside of the electrical installation area) is another matter! Though I would expect that they would be at least capable.

Agree with above, the JIB card is what would classify someone as being competent to carry out this work.. Not something most electricians will come across depending where their field of work is but if you're qualified you should have a basic understanding of how it works or at least the capability to figure it out given some thought!

As Richard above ^^^^

I would ask to see the SJIB/ ECS card that would be the main thing

There is plenty of crap work being done by NICEIC/SELECT APPROVED Contractors up here. Ask around neighbours and family ect, to see if they can recommend a good electrician

It wasn't for any work I needed doing specifically, it was just so I could get a general idea of what a customer should look for.

If I had 100 Scottish electricians in front of me what 1 card etc would tell me which ones to use without eliminating decent ones who just don't register with certain bodies.

The SJIB card seems to be the general consensus though?
Cheers guys

If only that had been the route England/Wales had taken, instead of allowing these bloody Part Pee provider parasites in, ripping off the fully qualified electricians at the same time allowing the incompetent fast track wannabes, a back door passage into the industry for a fee!!!!

Quite right E54, I think the Scottish system is much better, from what I can gather it's a bit like the system you used to have down there

That would depend on the area (geographical) they work in. Where I am there aren't many houses with mains gas so electric heating is the norm, therefore, you need to have a sound knowledge of heating systems to operate as an electrician
