And is it safe to use.. ( it looks scarey to me )

so its a bit old fashioned then ?
if the earths are disconnected during a rewire can the switch be used as a simple isolator?
Also the gas supply is connected to an earth connection on a socket with a green wire...
Would this "inactivate" this breaker?

Yeah, they're somewhat old and not used now. I've seen them with earths and without. I've twice encountered them during my annual NIC inspections and both (different) inspectors have advised to get them removed but suggested that they do have some worth as isolators (though shouldn't be relied on for safety, etc).

VOELCB - Voltage Operated Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker.
The last guy to fit them had a long white beard and took animals onto his big boat in pairs.:D

Was that Garry Glitter?

....probably. The days of free changes seem to be coming to an end. They're downstream of the meter.

You might be able to argue the ---- if the meter tails are under-sized?

Meter tails to this "thing" are quite small... No more tan 6mm so if I get the guys out to connect my 25mm tails they would probably remove this and connect my tails to the meter? I have had an extra 100 amp isolator fitted..

Man who did the work said i needed to get in touch to have this sorted out.

Is there a charge for this work?

Depends on who you have your supply with (EDF, Scottish power, etc)....the charges are not usually that much to be fair. Give them a call.
