This is a DIY FAIL!!!

Home owner bought an Ikea fitting, "I'll put it up myself" he says!

Existing ceiling rose (as a terminal JB) shoved up in the ceiling void.

Question is....... What has he done wrong?

Apart from not sleeving the switch live wires for identification (which would help by the way!) it will either be permanently on and not switchable because it is connected in with the permanent live (in the loop plate) This would mean the two switch wires are attached to each other so doing nothing OR 'it does all work' but is messy because what is in the loop plate should be in the end lamp feed plate. I like to think that because I am training, I now have more confidence to even have a go - wouldn't have done that a year ago!

Take that all back - dead short on the switch activation. The switch wire goes to the neutral bar from the line so BANG call an electrician. Understood my mistake whilst washing up - no wonder women rule the world!

Have another look at the picture and work out exactly what will be connected to what when the switch is closed. For once there isn't going to be a bang I don't think.

Or, last go (as there can be a few solutions!) nothing will happen with this light because the switch wire goes to the light flex and the neutral bar so no electrons flowing. This is why we identify permanent lives. I do hope one of these is right - multiple choice?

Switch wired to the switched live & neutral instead of perm live & switched live! I remember doing the exact same thing on my first day at college

paul, some time ago, you asked for trainess and mentors to post a pic of a ceiling rose that they had wired. your entry is too late for consideration in the comp. :death:

I know I'm going to get shot down in flames here, but be gentle as I haven't done anything 3 plate in ages........but can I ask why you sleeved that right hand red loop brown? Is it the feed down to the switch?

Tin hat on here
