What do you find you biggest challenge of being an apprentice is?

What is the thing you dread the most that you would like to bounce some ideas about?

For me I would probably say the process of being just a labourer to being actually useful.

I remember my first ever job. It was a block of flats in Dalston, London. There was 26 flats if I remember correctly and for the first six months of my apprenticeship all I done was noggins and back boxes. Nothing else.

However on the final flat the electrician said I could spend as much tome wiring it as I wanted. I learned so much that week and really felt I had gone from being just a pair of hands to actually being useful.

What’s your story?

I spent a disproportionate amount of time in the stores compared to the other apprentices. Possibly because the tradesman requested someone that could talk "football" with them. Not my scene.

When I did get "let out" on a job, I had to help correct the jobs where the other lads had gone wrong.

Did it feel good putting their crap right ?

As a mature apprentice in a maintenance department, my biggest challenge is to get any decent and regular install work. I get plenty of fault finding and alteration work but lack install knowledge and experience.

I've contacted loads of local companys and offered my services for free just for some install experience but no one seems to want to help

Why is that mate? Training but no work?

Yeah I started my level 2 this September, so when I started calling around. Everybody said they had already taken people on !

So I guess it’s just how the cookie crumbled for me this tune around !
