I have been an electrician for 7 years and just started working for myself! I've just completed my 2391 theory exam and would appreciate some advice on what test kit to buy? Was looking at the megger MFT1730 with on site software.

Also was thinking of joining ELECSA would that be a good move?

Thanks in advance

The Megger MFT1730 is a good all round instrument with RCD ramp test and phase rotation as well as the usual tests so covers the requirements well for testing. The rechargeable batteries are a major advantage.

I would have a look on the forum for various threads discussing just this issue, there is also a sticky on MFTs that may be of use here.

There are also numerous threads on which self certification scheme to go with which are worth reading.
I am with Elecsa and they seem to be doing well and provide a good service.
NICEIC are often recommended by councils etc but they are a bit overbearing and designed for the customer not the electrician.
Napit is the other one that is very popular.
BRE certification, and BSI and stroma (not really basic installation) are the other ones.

Good luck with the self employment.

It comes down to personal preference I suppose. I've got a Metrel Install test, I think it;s the 61557 but I'd have to go and check to make sure and I swear by it. I've had it for about 5 years now and it's never let me down, others swear by their megger gear a mate of mine loves his Kewtech seperates but for me if it's all in one bit of kit it's less to lug around

I just Purchase a 1730 and got it a lot cheaper than advertised everywhere from a good supplier, with some extras too,
I paid £700 +vat for the Mft WITH the software.

Sounds like a good deal, best I have found is £1002.00 inc VAT with software.

Could you tell me who was the supplier and what extras were included?

Cheers

Here's a link to a meter comparison app on the test-meter.co.uk site: Compare Multifunction & 17th Edition Testers
They're offering the 1730 for £745 with delivery and VAT it works out to £900.
Supposed to be a discount if you enter a code, but it doesn't appear to do anything?

What type of work will you be doing? If its only domestic with some commercial I would say the 1730 was a bit overkill, we use the 1720 and the 1553b
