Hello,

Is anyone on here doing HNC in electrical/electronic engineering??

I'v finished my 'electrician courses' which is good, but I think i'd like to progress a bit further.

Currently the firm i'm with does mainly domestic, with a bit of commercial, but what i'd really like to learn more about is industrial, as sadly, I generally find it quite interesting!

Is HNC the right course to chose? obviously colleges are different, but would it be a day release course? as obviously I would still need to work. Also, my maths is far from brilliant, would this be a big problem do you think?

thank you in advance.

From experience, my advice if contemplating doing HNC, is do ONC or A level maths first. The biggest mistake most engineering students make is to under estimate the level of mathematics required, your maths ability needs to one level ahead of your electrical theory all the way through your course, else you will struggle big time and risk dropping out early.
The problem you will experience is being dropped in the deep end and expected to swim, you are expected to know maths, electrical engineering and/or electronics to ONC level, This will be briefly reviewed in the first week where you will be expected to get up to speed. The second week you are definitely off and running at HNC level, it's no good saying "Please Sir, How do you factorise a quadratic equation?" or "I don't know the binomial series." The lecturers just don't have the time to go over stuff like that, the course material is shoe horned into the time available as it is.
At least under the BTEC HNC system you won't be confronted by the dreaded opening line to every question "Derive from first principles ..." that the former IEE HNC system so delighted in.
