Hi, i'v been self employed now for nearly 2 year's mainly doing domestic and commercial.. just recently i'v had this lad help me out who can think for himself, i'v offered him an apprenticeship but he says what i do isn't relevant to his college course...
Now i'v asked him what course he's on and ask lectures what qualification he will earn at the end.. By the sound's of it they have fairly tried to avoid an answer..
I remember when i first left school i went to this college and enrolled on an engineering course for 2 year at the end i applied for jobs and they said they never recognised the qualification.. total waste of 2 years free education and would hate to think there doing the same to this lad and god knows how many others.!
He's finally got some info out of them.. National diploma in electrical engineering "equivalent" to 3 A levels.. The equivalent to me sound's like there saying mickey mouse.. I thought it's city&guilds you want i.e 2330, 2382, 2391..
Any advise would be much appreciated :D

Thanx Shaun

My son's 15 and a load of his pals are given days of school work to start these diploma's instead of doing school work, think they take a few years to complete only problem is I dont think anyone outside of education system knows or for that matter recognises them - also some 'private colleges do them as they get ÂŁ4000 per student of the gov.
I could be totally of the mark but I think there what your on about.

Could well be OND, but then i think you had to have some previous qualification to get on that course. Used to be 3 year part time 1 day and 2 nights a week at collage for normal folk. But then again, just about everything has changed since my time of training. probably a 6 month course now ...lol!! Can't see how what your doing, would negate anything he would be doing at collage, if anything it will add to his knowledge!!!

Thanx for your replies :D
I think that course i got stitched up with was a BTEC.? or an EMTA.? few year ago.. Not fair that colleges put these kid's on courses no one recognises, never mind a waste of tax payers money..!!
Soo these diploma things are more for an early taste into work life for school kids.?? Fair play to this lad that he's said he's working with me for experience.. but the college told him i do installation where he does engineering..?? He's talked about electronics to me but doesn't know anything about earthing arrangements.. He's in his second year..
I think he mentioned something to me about it being a POA course if that means anything to anyone..??

BTEC is very much a recognised qualification, haven't heard of EMTA though!!

Typical of today's lecturers, in thinking Engineers don't need to know about installations, probably the reason why we have so many qualified, but know nothing young Engineers around today!! ...lol!!

The Diploma is a qualification for 14 to 19 year-olds, offering them a more practical, hands-on way of gaining the essential skills employers and universities look for. It’s aimed at increasing the choices available to young people and encouraging them to stay in education for longer.

there's loads of info on direct gov site, I think my previous post wasnt to far from the mark - only recognised by colleges and the like.
Cant see why they didnt put him on 2330, ?!?

I would say the 2330 (and anything else relevent to it 2382 2391) etc ......a proper 3 year course thats recognised in the industry...

Hi again
Thanx for all your replies :D
I still haven't got alot of info i keep meaning to chat with the college but i'v been too busy.. Which isnt a bad thing. :D
But from whet i've gathered he need's this to enrollee on a HNC then maybe a HND..??
Is this all worth while for the lad when there's a 2330 etc offered.??
Any more in info would be much appreciated.:D
Thanx Shaun
