Hi,

I'm 26 years old, a qualified lawyer and business analyst and am looking to retrain as an electrician. I've looked around on the web etc and this has just confused me even more however the information on this site has answered a lot of my questions so thanks.

I currently work 4 days a week and have a family to support and a house to pay for so would ideally like a training course that I could do outside of work hours or an intensive couse that would mean my time out of work would be short. I got my law degree by distance learning so am used to the disciplines of studying at home.

I've seen a lot of training providers that look like they offer courses which are suitable however the 'feel' of some of the sites makes me uneasy about their legitimacy.

If I was looking for an electrician I'd want one with NICEIC so I guess my question would be what qualifications are required to get to this certification?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Is this happy hour or have they let a load out of the nut house to save money

I'm not sure I understand your comment. Is it not usual to ask a question about electrical qualifications in an electrical qualifications forum or have I misunderstood the concept?

i thought that. lawyers at ÂŁ200/hour. sparks at ÂŁ20-30/hour. that could only make sense in a looney bin.

Suggest you do a few searches on "becoming an electrician" or "sparks wage in the current climate" on the forum before you rush to join the "club"

Qualified lawyers aren't all that. A lot of people don't know what to do when they leave school so they pick lawyer, accountant, doctor etc thinking it's big money so there's an abundance of qualified lawyers in this country resulting in it being extremely competitive and not the lucrative gravy train that everyone believes it to be. Even the law society are discouraging people from taking the exams. Very few earn the ÂŁ200ph just like very few electricians will run their own company with lots of employees and profit.

Also I don't like working in an office, there's lots of politics and little job satisfaction.

Well you've basically just described being an electrician there - cowboy training providers will tell you there's a "massive skills shortage" and you can "earn up to ÂŁ50,747" so there has been a big influx of new recruits who have had their IT jobs outsourced and are looking to jump on the next lucrative gap in the market.

The reality is that the 'fast track' courses on offer give you neither the knowledge nor experience to do the job, and due to the recession and peoples' willingness to have a go themselves to save money there is less work around than ever before, hence why you'll find so many electricians on here during the day.

If becoming an electrician is what you genuinely want to do then by all means go for it, although distance learning might be a more difficult way of doing a practically-based subject.

If you just want to cash in, I'd suggest starting your own distance learning course for lawyers - hoodwinking people into thinking they're investing in a lucrative new career is where the money is, and I can sell you a distance learning course to show you how to do it ;)

this is exactly the same as the electrical industry. People think its big money & can earn thousands.

you only have to read threads on here, at least 1 a day with people with the quals. willing to work for peanuts or for free just to gain experience so then aftre a few years of working for peanuts, they can then demand bananas.
