Sorry for what id imagine would be a repost. As im sure this would have been asked before.

Im currently finishing my level 2 (2330 technical certificate) and planning on starting my level 3 and site diary in September (site diary depends on whether im still in a job in september :()

Ive asked this so many times at college and training providers etc and never really get a "final answer".

To become a fully qualified electrician which qualifications do i actually need?

In my eyes i always thought it was level 2 and 3, site diary (nvq), and AM2. (2391 being a sought after additional qualification)

Any guidance would be much appreciated. As ever since i can remember ive wanted to call myself "an electrician" and want to make sure im making all the relevant steps. As im fully funding this myself.

Thanks in advance :)

There are many threads on this forum about the subject. In my view 2330 and then 2391 is the way forward, you will probably need to do the 17th Edition update exam as well. With 2330 and NVQ you are definately an electrician but as many have pointed out in other threads you do not need any qualifications to call yourself an electrician. Good luck.

qualifications HELP though! You are on the right rack. I don't know what it is with colleges, they just don't seem to want to commit to the REAL ANSWER that the course in and of itself will not QUALIFY YOU as a spark as recognised by the JIB. You must complete the NVQ 3 as well as the AM2 after completing the 2330 level 3.

Its a simple answer that they don't seem to want to give.

I've been where you are, and the (non) answers were just the same. Be interesting to hear what THEY say when you TELL THEM THE ANSWER.

KEEP US UPDATED DUDE.

As above the EWAR and bs7671 both state it is not a qualified electrician is a compent person. Someone who posses sufficient technical knowledge and experience as to not cause harm/danger to themselves or others. Something along those lines anyway, the full part could be found in part 2 of the regs.

agreed, MIKE, but what better way to demonstrate competence to a court of law, or future employers than by going through an accredited course. I appreciate that these courses are only the beginning of a long journey to competence through experience.

Thank you both Mike F and Voltzelectrical appreciate it.

I do understand and appreciate that knowledge/experience will always mean so much more than a bit of paper that says pass or fail.

I just want to make sure im putting myself through the correct "hoops" to get those pieces of paper, whilst also gaining the knowledge and experience i need to make myself the best electrician i can be. As im sure your both aswell as everyone else aware of the stupid prices of said courses and exams :(.

Thanks again to you both :)

Couldn't agree more, as in most cases your training and certificates would be a very good way of showing competence upto a certain level in any subject area. Also the best qualification out there is time served experience. Also the 2330 lv2 + 3 is a good starting block to then compliment with other courses to further your technical knowledge.

Teflon overcoat and skin like a rhino...........
Joking aside, I'm old school and employers all ways like C&G quals.
Dont do what I did and put money before advancing yourself, dropped out half way through C&G 236 pt3, took years to learn that stuff on the tools.
Go all the way to 2391.
Or try joinery.........................

do the courses and do the time. They go hand in hand. The 2391 doesn't mean any more than any other qualification. You need to be able to back it up on site. Once you are established, employer reference, word of mouth will endorse your certificates. The full package. In answer to your original question, YES. You are going in the right direction.

Good luck.

Well my plan of action. (all being well with keeping a job throughout the next 12 months or so is...)

To finish this year 2nd year of 2330, to then start my level 3 in September aswell as my nvq (site diary). Then sometime next year do my 17th edition exam. Then all being well then complete my AM2 and then depending on what company im with (experience permitting) hopefully complete my 2391 and see what happens next :).

The reason i say hopefully is 2 things, the company im currently with specialise in domestic rewires, usually for Bristol city council :(. However the contract is up for renewal in the next few weeks and they seem sceptical as to whether they will win it again. Also with regards to my 2391 my testing experience is pretty low, as im unable to do any testing as i am only on with the company as a "mate" which means im just shipped around doing all the stuff others dont want to.

that shipping around is great experience for you. Of course you will only be a mate until you get your ticket. And don't try to run before you can walk. The level 3 2330 covers the testing side of things, as well as basic fault finding techniques. You will get more experience including testing (which ain't all that and a bit boring to boot) as you go along.

Chin up lad.

Not knocking the shipping around one bit. Im fortunate enough to be in a job thats in the trade i love which is very lucky with the way the country/world is at the moment.

Id just like to gain the depth of knowledge. I.e domestic/commercial/industrial. It would also be nice to go in to work and not have to pretty much "throw it in" in trunking.

My love for the trade came from when i did my work experience with a really good company when i was 15. I thought i wanted to be an electrician so thought what better time to try it. I left after that week so proud at the work we had done. No rushing or cutting corners just 100% perfect installations.

I will find another company to complete my time.... I hope

Thanks everyone for your input :)
