Hi All,

I have read some very interesting forums on here.

I want to be an electrician but dont know what qualifications i need. What qualifications do i need to acquire so i am able to sign work off and also do periodic testings?

Add to the list:

Psychoanalyst
Marriage guidance councillor
Child physiologist
Dog trainer
Sprinter (I) (for when the dog training fails)
Hygiene specialist
Plumber
Accountant
Joiner
Demolition expert (that’s my speciality)
Navvy
Plasterer
Brick layer

Tiling
Mason (if you go for funny hand shakes, that’s up to you).

Sprinter (II) (for when the husband finds you)
Physicist
Magician
Teleportation

As a hobby take up transcendental meditation! Or drink!

I’ll bet others will add to the list!

not much, just a Electrical Trainee course and you will be sorted, tho if you if want to be a real spark go to college, will take a lot longer and you still wont be making 50k,theres better trades to get into at the moment, like gas/tiling/plastering..

Why do you say that? I hear sparkies make loads of money. Peridoic testings alone can get up to ÂŁ180 for less than one hours work.

I did city and guild 2330 a few years back. Did Level 2.

i did 2years at college doing patrs1 and 2 papers then i had to work 2years under a sparky so i did a total of 4years i then took my 2391 testing and inspecting course as i wanted to go it alone.I believe it maybe 2392 now?you can do a intensive 1 or 2week course but you can only sign your own work but your not allowed to do periodics even NICEIC take these people under there wings and call them domestic installers???????.Go through the correct channels and stay away from these 2week wannabe electricians as they are ruining it for the real sparks.

well with those figures your either making over 500k a year or working 2 hours a week..

As above don`t bother with the crash courses as they don`t give you the experience you need, go to college do 3-4 year apprentiship, learn the
trade correctly, ive seen a few so called sparks who have done the crash courses and havn`t a clue, experince is what counts, and you will become a better sparks, and earn a very good wage. Whoever told you he could do EICR in an hour is talking rubbish, and it isn`t worth the paper its printed on.

Not sure where you have got these figures from, but a typical domestic periodic is going to take a lot longer than 1 hour to be done properly - maybe 3 or 4 hours is closer to the mark for a property you'd charge ÂŁ180? Plus you need to cover lots of overheads that are not chargeable.

In terms of qualifications for periodic inspection, there is now the new C&G 2395, which is replacing the 2391, you can look this up on the C&G website. But a short course alone is not going to give you the practical experience needed, if you don't already have that.
