what qualifications to do next?

Alright everyone,

I've completed my 2330 level 2 and 3,and worked as a mate on an off for the past year although it hasnt been as regular as id like.i'm looking to get fully qualified..what courses should i do next? i know times running out to enrol on the 2356 NVQ, should i get enrolled on it then chase the work to complete it or wait till i find regular work?

Any advice appreciated

Cheers
Mark

Yes, I would.

I think you have until 2015 to get the portfolio in, but you would have to check. I finish my level 3 in may 2013, and i dread to think what i will have to do to get "fully qualified".

I dont think its cheap though!!

Like ive always said to myself during my re-training;

"If work is slow after qualifying ,then I would happier to be an out of work electrician, than an out of work nothing"

For me its pride in bettering(?) myself, whatever the outcome.

Hope you get your NVQ.

Although I dont think you have to have the NVQ to be classed as fully qualified, i thought it was just because you couldnt get a JIB Card, and they JIB are NOT the regulating body of electricians.

Cheers!

Thats the way i see it too, i'm 27 done a few dead end jobs..didn't really have much direction in the way of a career when i was younger..started doing PAT testing then decided to go back to college an do my electrical courses, and i really enjoy learning new things and having something to work towards..even tho ive finished college earlier this year i still spend too much time on here reading up on stuff i don't really understand yet,lol

I feel if you get your NVQ you can do all sectors of electrical work..your not limiting yourself to one area, which gives you more chance of work..

Good stuff - Ive got my 302 (Inspection & Testing) Written Exam in 10 days, any advice?, been sat here all night with my head in GN3, 17th & mock exams.

From what i remember it wasnt too bad..just keep practising mock exams, brush up on testing procedures(how to carry tests out, what instruments to use, what results expected),earth fault loop path diagram, what documents are filled out for new installation etc

Also i found this link theres a few more sample questions:

I hope this helps abit..
Good luck!

What so as long as you have your 2330 level 2 & 3 you can pretty much call yourself qualified? I finish my level 3 in the summer and the portfolio is driving me mad for the NVQ.
I was thinking about finishing my level 3 then going back to do NVQ at a later date??

Hi joey,

I am finishing my 2330 lv3 in the summer, and live in swansea - what college are you in?

As you may know there isnt really such a thing as "a qualified electrician"- more a "competent" electrician.

As far as i am aware there isnt a definitive list of qualifications that you must have by "law" so class yourself as a spark.

The problem we have though is that although the JIB are not the regulating body, it is very difficult to prove that you are competent and unfortunately gaining an JIB Electrcian card seems to be the only way, and of course it is recognised throughout the Electrical industry as a "yes, he is an electrician".

Doesnt neccessarily mean you are a competent one, as i am sure you are aware , completing the nvq 3 can be done in a way that puts little emphasis on the whole reasoning behind it, i.e taking photos of other peoples work, getting your employer to sign it off when they havent even seen it - the NVQ 3 from my point of view is a money making scheme end of.

So, no you dont have to have any qualifications to prove your an electrician - but it certaintly helps to have 2330 lv2 & lv3, and the nvq 3 should you be asked for proof of qualifications.

If your going completely self-employed, you could do everything ( not advisable) without any qualifications, but should the Sh*t hit the fan and kill someone, then you better be able to prove to the courts that you were "competent".
