Hi new here, i am a print machine installer and have been roped in to help a friend of mine with the mains electric for his new machine (dont worry not doin it myself)

But he needs to know what thickness 3 phase cable hee needs, the machine is rated at 100 Amp and the cable is going to run about 65 - 80 metres.
What thickness do you think is the right one and what do you think he can get away with, and does anyone know where to get such a length cheap?

thanks so much in advance
peter

Lack of info makes a response difficult as standard cable calc also include installation method, ambient temp', characteristics of load in this case been a large machine all can make a difference, but without any of this its possible 35mm or 50mm 4core but again lack of info so its just a casual guess.
Another thing to work out is the front end fuse size will 100amp fuses, mccb be sufficient or with it be necessary to install higher rated maybe 125amp in which case the cable sizing will again be affected.

Hi thanks for your reply, the temp will probs be no more than 28 Degress. the cable will run from a Distribution board amd straight to the machine with no other isolator in the middle. does any of this help?

Also do you know any good cheap suppliers, and one last thing (i promise) if a measure a cable with a micrometre will that be an acurate reading of its thickness or does it not work like that?

Cable measurement is denoted by its cross sectional area so in that respect forget you micrometer, its sounds from your response and hence you are on here asking that you lack electrical installation knowledge and your reply isnt very imformative, their are too many parameters to consider and getting any wrong may be expensive or disasterous, i would recommend getting in a qualified electrician to weigh it up for you.

Do you know any where who sells cabling cheap?

Thanks alot for your help

Its just a matter of ringing around the electrical wholesalers and getting the best quote but you may be void of discounts not having an account set up.
Senate electrical, Newey and Eyre, Edmundsons, CEF to name a few get them to quote against each other it may bring the price down.
P.S. it wont be cheap

No good measuring the outer sheath, but you could measure the diameter of one conductor strand and then calculate CSA.

D x D x 0.79 x number of strands
