Guys

I am a bit of crossroads career wise & was looking for some advice/guidance.

I am 36 & have been working in the ekectrical industry for approx 5 years, been to college & done C&G L2&3 NVQ 2,16th & now 17th & also 2391-10 i am not jib.

Basically work on various jobs from maintenance to domestic new builds, new DLR extension & so on.

I have been out of work for over a month now & i am becoming somewhat disillusioned,so i am contemplating do a HNC/HND in electrical engineering to widen the scope of jobs i can go for & to improve potential earnings, but need to find a few things out before i part with any cash/commit myself to studying again.

One completing the hnc/hnd would it be recognised enough to be able to find work? i am likely to come across problems finding work having only just passed to course & almost being 40?Is it a case of who you as appossed to what you know when trying to get jobs?which is what i'm finding working on the tools.

I have no real engineering experience but obiviously have an electrical background.

Any help would be much appreciated

HNC/HND would open up management areas for you without a doubt and even quite a few deisgn posts. It is though a big jump from the 2391-10 or even the 2391-20 to HNC, purely for the maths side.

This is a normal City and Guilds maths bridging course that is advised for us guys that are going onto do the HNC, this is less than a year old as a freind of mine sent it to me as he was doing it and asked for advice on it.

In all honesty your still a young'un and you can get an HNC/HND easily with work in 18months maximum 2 years and so still be under 40. You still then would have nearly 30 yrs to offer so IMO go for it.

We are both sophomores in college, she is incredibly attractive and many people like her I have not been as up front, because I didn't want to be just another guy. We also hangout with the same group of people, but we don't text or and we have just started chatting on the book. I want to know from a girls point of view if these signs, this girl is giving me is it obvious she likes me or what.

I'd go for it mate ..............any chance of a few pics when you manage to do the deed.

You can do your HNC/HND via Teeside Univerisity on the COLU programme as a distance learning course, which my mate is doing, in fact he completed the HNC in about 11 months and is starting the HND in about 2 months. I think I'm right that the HNC is about 10 modules and he reckoned that they were excellent. His tutor was great, always available and he kept in contact with him over SKYPE.
I know this is the address

COLU
School of Science & Engineering
Teesside University
Middlesbrough
TS1 3BA

01642 342526

As I said in the original post I would go for it, you won't regret

Okay cool

So you'd recommend doing the hnc before attemping the hnd?

Also whats the best way of getting up to speed with the maths?my maths is okay but i left school i a long time ago,i was alright with the level maths for the city & guilds but i had a look at the attachment fo rthe bridging maths & didn't have a clue, but i'm sure if i got tutored on it that i grasp it

You would have to do the HNC first as that will follow you onto the HND, if as you say the maths are a bit rusty then COLU would make you do it that City & Guild bridging course, then HNC/HND.

In all honesty I would do the short 2391-20 course, the maths in that is nowhere near as intense, but it will give you a feel for doing calcualtions and if you want to then carry on, you'll at least be going that way so to speak.

Yes my mate said they were excellent with him. very much supportive and helped him get through the maths, as he said once you get a grasp of it, it all slots in, it's getting that initial grasp.

Hi chin
You say onc, sorry if i'm being a bit slow but what's "onc"
Also with regards to the JIB i thought they were more to do with installation, where as going down the hnc route i'd be leaning more towards engineering/design?
Please correct me if i'm wrong

its good you ask mate onc is btec national i.e hnc is higher national
onc took me 2 years one day a week hnc should take 2 years one day a week then to make it into a hnd you would have to do a few more units
but to be trueful i have never even put the hnc units on a cv once
i got JIB gold card without onc etc
