Hi all i have worked as an apprentice via JTL for 2.5 years in 2007, i gained my key skills and 2330 levels 2+3. I lost employment and so joined the army after a year of trying to gain an apprenticeship again at the age of 19, i am now 21 and have just started a 2 month trail with a decent firm and was wondering if self funding the nvq via vq training would be better than trying to restart with JTL as i heard funding is an issue now for me due to time already spent at college and my age etc.. I really dont mind self funding my nvq and am2 but have on the other hand heard this route can be risky as when you get JIB gold card it will say adult trained rather than time served apprentice which can put employers off, is this true. Any replys/advice would be great.
Thanks.

i did my nvq with totalpeople they funded me through my course i was 25 at the time like you i went with jtl 1st but they were unreliable never turned up for planned site visits

Hi did you just ring them and explain your situation? and do they do site visits or is it all done online, also how did you go about getting funding and when was this as things have tightened right up with funding over 19s.
Regards.

basically i went in the college and talked tm my old college teacher he gave me the address of the training provider and gave me the number to 1 of the trainng officer 30 mins later i was sat in their office doing a colour blind test and sitting an interview and their taking photocopys of my certs and that was it

aslong as your employed in the industry they should take you on unless its changed

i wonder if being self employed and counting the course against your business for tax relief is an option. if the company you're working for will let you change from cards in to subby, just thought i'd put that out there.

Hi Ryan
I retrained as an adult (34) and after passing 3yrs college 2330 3 then went on to pass my NVQ3 with Quickstep. They never let me down always showed and helped with any issues. I was referred to them by the NICEIC and recommend them, they are based i think in Cornwall but travel all over the country. As an adult trainee you would not have to pass an AM2 and once your company signed your papers applying for a JIB card it doesnt say 'Adult trainee' just Electrician.
Hope this helps
