I have been out the industry for 10 years, even though I have kept abreast of regulations. I am a apprentice served, having 20 years exp, HNC Electrical Eng and a BSc in Electrical and Electronic Eng. I am looking to enter the Industry again and I'm looking to sit the 17th Edition Full Exam and Part p. I would like to do the 2382 Exam only, but have come up against a wall where my qualifications stand for nothing and insist I take the City & Guilds training, is this really the case? As the Part P has a practical component and assessed, then I understand that taking a training course is very useful. Any pointers?

What are you hoping to come back into the industry as ? with a degree is it as an hands or in design/management?

The 17th edition is the 2382 exam, though you have 2 kinds the full course which is the 2382-20 or the 1 day update 2382-10. You can only do the 2382-10 if you have the 2381-2001 course or done later training.

As your highlighting the Part P side i'm assuming that your wanting to do just domestic work, I have to ask with your quakifications why? There are so many domestic installers around now it really isn't what I consider a good move.

When I lived in the South, I ran my own business, where I would be involved in the management and the technical design and certification of the work we would do. Having moved to the North and not been active in the Industry for 10 years, I would like to start the business up again, however I feel it important that I am fully up to do date "Certified" both Commercially and Domestic (residential). I'm just confused to why that the non-C&G qualifications I have and the 20 years exp, seems to have no pre-requisite to bypass 2382-10 Exam and they insists in C&G Training Qualifications?

some colleges will allow you to take the 17th exam only, but unless you are familiar with bs 7671, it's advisable to do the course, think it's around ÂŁ240 now. can be done as a 3/4 day course or evenings.

I agree, I suppose I was trying to understand why the insistence of specific C&G qualifications to bypass the training course specifically for 2382-20, when my existing qualification should meet the pre-requisites. All i wanted to do was sit the exam, looks like I have to start as a rookie again.

That's the issue, they wont let me do it even though 1 know 7671 inside out, but because I have "old" qualifications including a 5 years industry recognised apprentice when I was young, they take none of this into account, even the 20 years exp. They insist on the C&G qualifications. The industry has changed in the last 10 years and I have kept abreast of current regulations, but as said looks like I'll have to completely retrain again. The message I suppose is never let your experience lapse regarding qualifications.

Think the majority of the posts here have advised you that yes you will need to do the full 2382-20 course, you maybe lucky and blag yourself onto an exam only test, but as you have been out of the industry for so long, that is not likely.

As you say you know the BS 7671-2008 inside out, think of it as a beano, also it's always good to have a few days around other guys in the industry to bring you up to speed on things.
