I've been rewiring a house and the cable which supplies the garage is a type which I've not come accross before and need a bit od advice.
Basically it looks like SWA, has a solid red core (4mm), a copper stranded CPC and then stranded black wires which make up the neutral.
It bells out ok, and the customer doesn't want to re-supply the garage if possible so I want to know if a) I can leave it in place and b)what is the correct way of making it off, is there a special gland or d'you just terminate it like it was in the old c/u (all bundled together and screwed down in the neutral/earth bars)?

Any help appreciated :)

Hello Chris what you have is split concentric cable which needs no special glands for making off, just terminate as they were. As you are rewiring and as long as new board with rcd etc and cable size is fine and all check it should be fine. Split concentric is not armoured

I was a split concentric virgin up until the other day as well. Did not install it just came across it on a domestic garage install.
It had 7 cores for the phase/line whatever it is called nowadays, 7 smaller diameter cores for neutral and three cores for the cpc.
Does anyone have a table for the different csa and current carrying capacities for this type of cable

as this cable isn't armoured, will it then require RCD protection, depending on the installation method?

I personally don't like the stuff, never once seen a termination of this type of cable look anything but a mess. Even when a purpose made heatshrink cable sealing end (can't think of the correct name for them ..lol!) has been used!! Best left to the DNO companies, they don't care what the terminated ends in the cut-out look like...lol!!
