to become self employed? I'm a qualified time served spark with 17th edition with 10 years experience and will hopefully have 2391 within the next few months (due to sit exams next month).

I've been thinking of going on my own domestically at first but there seems to be so many brick walls you've got to knock down before setting an electrical business up without touching the general setup (ie materials/base/van/equipment etc).

So say if i do get my 2391 what do i do next to get on that ladder? What are the minimum requirements for practicing domestic electrics by law. Ie would i be able to just do part P course, get a part P certificate, buy liability insurance cover and be on my way or must you by law sign upto NICEIC or Napit or another approved body?

no need for the so called part p course. have 2 samples of work ready to be assessed by whichever scheme provider you choose. pay your money they will come out and assess you. if all is well and you get your membership, off you go. I didnt have a van, just used a big estate car. there is a link on here for liability and indemnity insurance I got a quote for £54 the other day off one of them. well impressed. main thing is advertising or the best frm word of mouth. if only youu could subscribe to a word of mouth advertising schem:)
post your details in this forum on the electricians in your area form

ps good luck with the exams, and by law the part p scheme will apply if you are wanting to stay the right side of things

Cheers Phil, i thought it was more complicated than that. Mind you this 2391 aint a walk in the park and i know it shouldn't be. Just hope i pass. Just out of curiosity have you only recently started your own business? Is it domestic stuff you do? How are you finding it, better than contracting?

no mate going over to the other side. just got my first in a line of teaching quals last year and just finished my nvq assessors award. all thanks to the help and great advice from one of my former tutors who i now consider a very very good friend. he went over and beyond for everyone of us in the class. if i ever know half of what he knows and can ever get to the standard of his teaching i would be a very happy man. i have had some exceptionally good and bad levels of teaching, and have been fortunate to sample a few of the good tutors. i just hope i can give some good to the industry and help the guys and girls coming into it.
a mate of mine has just joined elecsa and he is well impressed with them, if you read some of the posts on scheme providers you will get a lot of different views and reasons for and for not joining certain ones.
they all roughly charge the same so its a matter of what you want off them and who you want to be with. just a little thought though. when i joined the nic my assessment did not happen for a couple of months and my registration date started from when i payed my money so in essence i lost 2 months off my anual subscription. dave who joined elecsa paid his cash and was assessed about 7 weeks after he paid his cash and his annual renewal will end a year after he had the assessment:) well done elecsa
