Hi there,

I was just wondering what could i expect to see or not see on my continuity tester if testing a ring circuit that that has r1 & rn cross conected for the test but some where along the ring r1 & r2 are reversed?

many thanks

There would be no reading at the point of the cross connection, unless the cables are re-connected further along.
The measured values should also increase as you progress away from the CU, towards the cross connection, just the same as would occur if there were a break in the CPC or line conductor.

If you do an end to end test, line to line would show up as an open circuit but line to one of the neutrals would show a closed circuit therefore proving a reversed termination. Problems start when you've got 2 on the same ring, that's another story.

Thanks guys. i see you wouldnt get to the cross connect stage if the end to end test showed an open circuit as it would have to be resolved!

You need to do the end to end tests to find out the resistance of each conductor. If you have a crossed leg you will get an open circuit reading as you said.

But if you have 2 crossed legs the readings will come up fine on end to end and r1 r2 test. Only a visual inspection of each socket would find the crossed legs.

Thanks again guys!
I guess 2 crossed legs on a ring circuit must be rare but away from doing a visual "which i know your supposed to do" which would uncover such a senario would any tests show that type of situation?

Hi,
as far as I understand, you wouldnever find (I hope so) for example r1 and r2 terminated in one terminal no matterwhich one, in my understanding reverse polarity is when you terminate line legsin terminal earth and vice versa, so on step one(end to end) , your readingswill be fine because your conductors still continuous don’t mater where arethey terminated. On step 2 (r1&rn) as in your case you will have aninfinity reading at the socket where you have reversed polarity, and on step3(r1&r2) test you will get ok readings too, because that’s where it isreversed polarity is between.
Ok now, because it was my first post(never mind that I am on here very often for almost a year now), I feel that Ihave to run and hide, because top guys will give me some battering. No offence,we all live and learn, including me, and I love this forum where you can helpothers and learn yourself.
