The lamp posts on a small lane near me have had blue triangles painted in front of them. It looks like these are to mark the presence of a small metal pin, similar in appearance to a rivet.

Anyone know what they are for? Too small to be an earth rod.

PIn is a surveyors reference point, nothing to do with the lamppost unless they're all going to be relocated.

Definitely something related to the posts. Every post has one next to it, and there are none anywhere else.

Good point though, maybe they are moving them or something. Although why you need a tiny metal pin to mark where a twenty foot lamp post is??

It's used as a marking position for the surveyors theodolite so they can repeat their measurements with repeatable accuracy.

Cheers. There's a new bungalow being built on the opposite side of this lane, so maybe related to that. Strange that every lamppost has a pin though.

Round here, a cable tie round a lamppost is a sign for dog thieves that there’s a target in the garden.

you don’t have dogs do you?

Some of these posts are not outside houses. Pretty sure they will be surveying pins as suggested above.

Good point to be aware of though. Also watch for a spray painted dot for the same purpose, ie dog theft
