My apprentice asked me about this when a voltage drops the current increases so why can you use 110v on building sites so i though id share the answer for any one else who wants to know , the reason is the transformer , we know that a safe voltage is less than 50 volts so what the transformer does is almost give you that they use what is known as a slip winding on the secondary side so you have 230 volts going in then 2 x 55 volts going out at 55v - Ov - 55v thus giving you 110 volts the earth is continuose and also connect to the Ov tapping of the transformer so any path to earth you will only get a 55 volts so there you are the reason you can use 110 volts ,there is a small 5 volts which could be classed as an unsafe voltage so care should still be taken hope its of use:rolleyes:
