I've had to run a 25mm 3core swa from meter (outside) to DB about 8m away, do I need to fit
a switch fuse or isolator switch in meter box?

Or does this only apply to meter tails more than 3m?

Thanks in advance

Normally the top right hand corner of the meter box is reserved for an isolator/switch fuse. You should ideally install a switch fuse in this space and connect your SWA to the load side of this and the tails from the meter supplying the switch fuse. Its worth noting That some DNO's get funny if you install your own equipment within the meter box but I've never had this problem.

you dont need a fuse isolator switch..fuse isolator switch needed just when you have under 25mm cable..in every home dno supply its 100a who its suitable for 25mm swa or 25mm tails..if you run a 16mm swa you have to have fuse isolator switch after meter with the fuse suitable for this size of conductors..in your situation its not necessary..for isolator switch its two different situation..if the meter its already fix you don't need to have isolator switch..if the meter its not fix yet and you waiting for suppliers to come and fix again its on two diferent situation..if you call EDF they not asking you for isoator switch .they dont mind if you have or dont have switch isolator..if you call British Gas they fixed their own switch isolator after meter where you fix your swa or tails..

So you would have an 8meter run of SWA with no switch fuse...do you think the DNO will be happy with a run that long and the only over current protection device being the suppliers fuse?

Thanks for that.

Shame their members don't all sing from the same hymn sheet, nor do they all work in a consistent manner, nor get any gold stars for being helpful towards sparks!

I've had EDF refuse to connect when an isolator was in "their" cupboard and then state that the CU must be within 3 meters of the DNO fuse!

Idiots lol. How did you get round it?

in the best practice you can fix fuse switch isolator even DB its 1 meter from electric meter..no one say you are wrong..we talk here which its right according regulation , not who its the best practice..the best practice its to have fuse isolator after meter and this fuse to be bit under size or same of DNO fuse..in case of something going wrong on the costumers side the fuse on switch fuse blow and you dont need to call supplier to come and change fuse ..

before couple month i have ask EDF to fix 5 electric meters on 5 new homes and they not asking me to have fuse isolators or switch isolators near meter..they just fix meter and connect 25mm swa cable who going to DB and go..on another different location house i call British Gas and they fix meter and their own switch isolators and go..after them i have to connect by my self 25mm swa who going to DB..

I can't make out much of your post but how did they connect the SWA to the meter out of interest?

sorry..i not explain all on the previous postage but i have prepare that 25mm swa cable for connection on the meter before EDF meter installer comes to install meter..its mean i have terminate them on 4x4 metal box and left just 3 core to connect to the meter and earth terminal..edf meter installer just connect them on the meter and earth terminal..

The customer was their, the EDF bod wouldn't budge so the CU location was changed!

I have no time for muppets like this......

Blimey! The few round my way are as good as gold as known them for years..never get asked for dead certs etc. On a few jobs out of the area I've come across a few little hitler's who think they have been sent from the sparky gods. One wasn't happy as no bonding had been installed.....no gas in the building, blue MDPE pipe as incoming water, about 400mm of copper after the stopcock and the rest of the installation in plastic...prat

Imo its industry standard to fit a switch fuse if the length of the cable be it swa, meter tails, T&E, MICC, etc is longer than what is stipulated the max length by the DNO. Round my way you wouldn't get away with the method you've described if over 3meters.

I would hazard a guess your electrician may be able to contact your DNO and have the switch swapped to a MFS very quickly..
