Came across some old imperial cable today. Seems to be tinned copper with VIR then a fabric wrap and and steel over braid.

Never seen it braided before but what shocked me was the fact that the cable integrity was perfect. VIR was like new.

What was the large 7core used for?

Cheers.

The old VIR/TRS cable was a pretty damn good cable overall, what it wasn't very good at, was standing up to the excessive heat generated by the incandescent lamps of the time, or being constantly overloaded, which was generally the case when you consider that most domestic's of that time, you were lucky if you had one socket outlet per room, and in some older cases just one 15A socket in the whole house generally in the kitchen, used for washing boiler. As domestic electrical appliances become more and more available, it was often the case of DIY additions off that single outlet or extension leads running everywhere, even off the lighting pendants... lol!!

When i stripped out the twin and T&E VIR/TRS cable from my parents house, it was only some of the ends that showed any signs of deterioration, in fact after the 40 years it had been in service it looked and tested as if new. So much so, i used some of it to wire up my fathers garage. It was still in service several years later when the property was sold, and still as good as when i installed it...
