when wiring catering van ...have I read correctly or incorrectly
1....... I see catering vans on the street with their electrics run over the wall boarding and enclosed in conduit to their sockets . i.e surface electrics . Have I read correctly or incorrectly in thinking ....certain Festivals ,Gigs where this method does not comply with Regs and the electrical inspector will refuse the van on to site

It may be on the surface, but it’s mechanically protected by the conduit and is safe.

if it was just Twin&Earth clipped direct to the surface, I would worry.

thank you for the prompt reply.... I don't know where I read in my research that all electrics must be run in Artic blue hidden behind wallboard , as surface method on big festivals will not be allowed, the electrical inspector will be looking over the van for all electrics to be hidden ... this has stuck in my head.

If they have any specific requirements at a festival, why not ask the organiser for a copy of there requirements or what british standard they expect to be adhered to?

Any organiser of events can put whatever conditions they want in their agreements to allow Catering or similar on site.
Having wiring concealed would be more Hygienic.
Some won't allow gas.
Some want Super Silent generators.
You'd need to check the conditions for any event you propose trying to get on.
Events like Glastenbury are very strict on pricing and staffing and insist that they inspect, for which you pay.

It's not really a problem as the catering on most large events is already signed and sealed to a very limited number of suppliers.

Is this for a Catering van you're doing for yourself?

All cables have to be the tri ratted type .not solid cores . As for surface conduit. Dont know of a reg to say you can't do this .It may be possible due to hygiene so surfaces can be cleaned down

thanks all. yes this van is for myself .the electrician is working on it at present ,whilst researching for correct power supply for my needs I read so much material and this one stuck in my head I wonder if this applies to America ..in that case that information is irrelevant

If i was doing one for myself and the funds allowed, i would go for a stainless steel surface mounted conduit system with stainless accessories.

IP69k i think is the spec, suitable for steam and pressure washing.

If its good enough for commercial food prep and butchery, its good enough for a sandwich van on wheels.
