We were approached under recomendation to check the wiring on a large property. A gas engineer had recommended this and pointed out a couple of faults with his wiring. He had been using the same electrician for a number of years but was becoming suspicous with regards to the quality of work.

When the other spark heard we were being involved he decided to leave a list (To help us out)

He stated, in writing, that he had left the ground floor sockets without an earth because of a fault somewhere under the floor :eek:

He also stated that the lighting circuits had no cpc. Guess who had fitted the brass light switches and brass light fittings.:eek:

He proudly stated that the gas was bonded in 10mm. Yep and it was taken from a nearby kitchen socket.:eek:

Looks like we have our work cut out on this one, lord knows what the full pir will throw up. Sure we come across isolated incidence like this but how can these types operate with such blissfull ignorance.

God help us all.:(

we have had a couple like that around here. This one though is very obviously dangerous and, not in an insulting way, ignorant. Obviously this one cant be allowed to continue. The way mY colleague and I have dealt with the one particular thorn in the side around here is to point out to him that the 14th edition no longer exists, his work is safe but obviously its being highlighted now. he has been a sparky for 50 years and is earning to supplement his pension. We have given him as much work as he had, and the trade off is he runs his work through us. all 17th now and he is happy, and can continue to earn his money to top up his pension without paying thousands for upate courses. Got a feeling we will all be like that one day, thats why we did it.
MrDangerous needs to be tracked down and invited for a pint, and a gentlemanly chat along the lines of shape up or shape out.

i would love to sit down fot a pint with semi qualified sparks and help them, (thats why i am on here) but i don't get chance. Unfortunately i don't live in a nice community like the isle of white, where people are nice to each other.

your absolutely right mate. The island is a lot bigger than people think though, but agreed is still small. The benefit I suppose is its not so easy to hide here, and easier to weedout bad Bu*****s. Your right we are always nice, for the first couple of times. After that matters are refered to the relevnt authorities.

I woke up on the beach on the Isle of Wight one Saturday morning when I was 17. I had wanted to go to nova scotia, apparently, but didn't have the passport on me the night before. God know's how I even got to southampton. I was, of course, vey, vey drunk, and that was the beginning of many visits there. Lovely girls on the IOW. They also seem preoccupied with their many-coloured sand, some kind of ship-race and these rocks that don't look anything like needles! I think I'm overdue a visit....

Just a quick update. We spent the first half hour on a visual and told the customer a periodic would be a total waste of time. (Way to many code one's and two's poking us in the eye)
A full rewire is now on the cards as the only common sense way forward. The socket circuit without earth has been isolated until then, along with a lighting circuit which had brown blue 1mm wired to vir's unbelievable.
The customer has some floor lamps to see him through. He was very appreciative of our reasons for isolation once the dangers were explained.
Just glad we don't come across these situations to often.
They are a lovely couple with two young children living in the house, makes my blood boil.

I will be buying you a pint then but for the right reasons M8. I cannot understand why our visitors buy glass "shapes" from the tourist shops filled with layers of different coloured sand either. If you think the girls are lovely here then you were vey vey drunk. Good idea to bring your own.Either that or the ones you spotted were on holiday from England.

Ha ha yea I'd have to bring my own now, or I'd never hear the end of it! I think I got tricked into having a multi coloured sand keyring in the shape of the island... it was a pain it always dug in my leg and the layers all merged into one hermogenised colour in about 10 seconds.
I think they may have been holidaymakers, though I did see one girl who definitely lived there. That was also the first place I impressed a girl by dinging the bell on one of those fairground attractions when you hit the thing with the mallet and the other thing shoots up... you know the things. Simple times, but they were fun.
