After my Electrical/Electronic Engineering Degree, and after all the qualifications. Where do I get my actual experience to move up the Managerial/Supervisory ladders, do I just wait for promotions/push promotions, or are there actual schemes where I can prove my competency in managerial work? Ideally I'm aiming for Senior Electrical Engineer, but obviously the higher the better. ÂŁÂŁÂŁ *cough* ÂŁÂŁÂŁ

you start at the bottom and depending on how ruthless you are in knocking people off the ladder, the faster you will climb the corporate ladder. or, you can salute the system with 2 fingers and go it alone. you might struggle to earn a living, but at least you'll sleep at night.

Very ruthless :89:.
But how do I show my competency? Do I just show off to the boss and hope my flaunting works? :uhoh2:

just make sure you get the credit for everything you do right, and blame someone else for everything you do wrong. that way, you have alternative careers in banking or politics.

There is a saying that money does not by you happiness which i think is what Tel is getting at.

Work hard, enjoy what you do and always be prepared to take responsibility and make things happen. Also don't be afraid to go outside your comfort zone and try something new. Accept that you will make mistakes but make sure you learn from them.
Do all that and you will end up where you deserve to be. Easy ;)

In my view you don't show your competence with a bit of paper, you earn respect, that can only be done by getting results. That said there is no harm in a few subtle reminders to the boss now and then but don't forget he has to like and respect you to promote you...........

You could buy yourself a large tub of Vaseline and learn to relax ......

you start with milk , 2 sugars and photocopy this.
is aiming for senior roles with little work experience a good idea ?
and as for waiting for promotions to just come along , well , ahem.......

Been there done it, and got the T shirt, video and DVD. Its crap. I am more than happy at the bottom of my ladder. Its OK being the big chief, with the big wage, but its eight days and nights a week. When you get to the top, there is still someone higher than you, and you will have to schnivel to it, all your underlings will stab your back to death. I now go to work to work, and when i come home, i am home, works stays in the car, out in the street, unless i am working from home.

Cheers..............Howard
