Hello,

Please help I am looking to re-train to become a electian but do not no where to get my training and what traning I need to do. I understand that I need C&G 2330 lv2 and lv3 to start and then C&G 2356 NVQ lv3. OLCI offer this @ ÂŁ5858.85 but when questioning them about signing of your own work thay started getting confused and wasnt sure at what point I could do this. The way I undersatnd it you need to do your EAL lv2 part P to sign your own work off? (this is not part of the course thay offer).Thay also told me that your C&G 2330 meant you didnt need to do your 17th edition IEE,C&G 2392 and C&G 2377 as this was all part of the 2330 and over rid these? It appears for the money you get a few days in the center and the rest sat at home reading and dont even end up with all you need to install and sign of your own work.

I have also been looking at Able Skills in Dartford. There Training for JIB Gold card course @ ÂŁ8595 where it appears that you do all your training at there facility. This course includes your C&G 2330 lv2 and lv3 with C&G 2382-2377-2393-2392-2391-AM2 and C&G 2357. Now that is alot more than OLCI claim you need but at a bigger price aswell. I am happy to pay more money for the RIGHT course but is this it?

I am also intrested to no at what point can I start doing and signing of my own work as I need to pay for whatever course I am doing. Am I correct in saying that when I have done my C&G 2330 lv2 and C&G 2393?

As I said please help either if you have used either of the training centers or no of any better ones in Essex or could shed some light on what a fully quilified electrian is and what I need to start working with or for someone?

Many thanks

John

You will get plenty of advise and no doubt abuse for your questions
I will give you none of either, other than tell you what the course will not provide

Without this provision, employment as an electrician will be extra diifficult when competing with armies of electricians who are without work and also possess that item

That item is practical on site experience
If you search this forum, your questions are answered on many threads

Thank you for your concern but I do not plan to be employed by anyone but myself and I am lucky that I have family who own a property managment company (mainly industrial) and have lots of freinds in the building trade aswell. I also live in the south east so benifit from a densly populated area. I also plan to do solar pv wich will broaden my working ability.

If you have any helpful advise I would be grateful.

Many thanks

Its a shame you read the post without understanding the context, anyway, its repeated above because like it or not, your training course will not get you the on site experience that is essential

That is unlesss of course you intend using the general public and their installations for your necessary practical experience, that will certainly not be sufficient at the course completion

If however you do,my thoughts and sympathy will be given to those recievers of your inexperienced efforts

Also with your dismissive attitude to me and other electricians (who have experience) and actually understand the trade and the shortcomings that will beset you, with your lack of on site experience, maybe when your course is complete, and you return to this forum asking help of those same members, perhaps your overconfident attitude to the complexity of the job will mellow

As you seem to have already an intended market sorted out I would recommend you do a 5 week course that will enable you to become a domestic installer, I believe that it is far cheaper than the 8k course.

Once you have completed the course you can then sign up for your chosen scheme, obtaining admittance to a scheme will not be that difficult as the main criteria for them is money and your capability to inhale and exhale.

Can't you just do it the old fashioned way and go to NIGHT SCHOOL? If you have a spare 5k to waste, send it to me and I'll train you.

I haven't read all posts but if you've got good contacts get to QS level before January 2012. That shouldn't be difficult with your contacts. Your contacts will then get you the experience you need. You can then continue your training but look for the most cost effective solutions.

Hi John,

I'm at Able Skills at present doing an electrical course. Can't contrast with the other providers since this is my first electrical course. Able work very hard to get you through the courses. Able make you do lots of live testing even on the Level 2 which is not always the case with some providers (according to a mate of mine that's gone through another training provider) Some of the lecturers have worked in the local FE colleges. They prefer working at Able since the students, having parted with shed loads of money are very keen to learn and don't tend to waste their time. I simply didn't have the time to spend several years in college doing the qualifications. Able have military approval for retraining so there is quite a contingent of ex Army, RAF people there too. As people here are saying though - getting experience in the real world is the problem. As I understand it - I am at the point where I can register with Napit or Elecsa. I have completed the 17th Edition C&G, Part P C&G plus the 2330 L2 (and PAT testing). With Napit you have to gain the 2391 within 18 months. I'm hoping to get out with experienced 'Sparks' to gain the on site experience. I'd bone up on your maths a bit - There is a reasonable amount of Algebra etc within the course. yes - Not cheap, but neither's going to University these days.

Hope that's of some help

Harry
