6 months ago I did a board change for a friend, tested all fixed wiring and issued an EIC with recommendation it is tested in another 5 years, they are going to rent the flat out and I was just wondering, do they need an EICR to do this or would the EIC suffice until the 5 years is up. It seems a bit daft to EICR it now!

Probably best if you had carried out an EICR before you changed the Consumers Unit.

If they are renting it out via an agent then an EICR is the report they need. (or a landlords safety certificate as the "trade" call it!)

Can't see anyone forking out on a EICR, then paying for a CU change, that will come with a EIC. Or do you mean carrying out suitable tests, before quoting for CU change?

Always do my testing before changing a CU, be a bit of a mug if you didn't

I always carry out a selection of test prior to any board change, end to ends etc, ze, check bonding, look for earth at light fittings if an old installation, check IR, thats about it, other than a visual all the way round to see if there are any nasties.

hum... I have to disagree.

I was invited to quote for a CU change a couple of weeks ago - one look at the installation, (3 x CU's and dates back to 1956) told me that an EICR was required before anything could be considered.

So the customer agreed to an EICR before anything else was decided!

Its all posted on the other channel if you are interested!

I would agree with you Murdoch in the circumstances you've described, but for simple one CU change (in this case a flat), I don't think an EICR could be factored into the price IMO.

I price a board change to allow for about three hours for board change & up to 6 hours for fault finding. I megger before board change - N to earth bar. Did one yesterday. 2 N to E dead shorts, one on the ring easy to find by splitting ring & diving til I found it. The other was on the cooker, some numpty had earthed back box of cooker connection unit and then put neutral in middle so dead short!! Ended up out of pocket on that one actually but usually I say something on the quote along the lines of if there are latent faults then fault finding is chargeable. Otherwise I would never get any board changes! Nine times out of ten it's all good and I make more money per hr and it kind of makes up for the tenth time like yesterday when it all goes ---- up! Nightmare yesterday! Terrible sparks had done cooker (left no length on cable at all on proper heavy integrated double oven, cooker connection inaccessible had to cut out back of units with multitool! He also neglected to earth one of the class 1 lights with inaccessible JB) ONE OF THOSE DAYS HAHA!

There is one reason to have an inspection every three years instead of the five. Itā€™s more work and money for them šŸ˜šŸ˜
