This is possibly going to sound like a dumb question but there.

We need to install a device for getting damp air out of shower / bathroom. I have had experience of the ceiling mounted ventilator and was considering a powerful one capable of moving 175 cubic meters per hour, (our bathroom is 12.5 cu meters) but others are suggesting the sort of whole air system where a central extraction fan gathers the air in the attic but just connect it to the the bathroom only, this sort will shift 20 cu m/h.

To me it seems we should go for the ceiling mounted type but is there something about the other type which I am overlooking.

Thanks for any help, ribald comments welcome.

It sounds like the central extraction fan system is a heat exchanger which takes the heat from the damp air and uses it to heat the cold air coming in from outside and pipe it to another room. You would usually put extracts into the bathroom and kitchen and feeds into the living rooms. If it is then I am told these only really work for modern houses where there is a good degree of air tightness but I have never fitted one to find out. I would go for a normal ceiling mounted or in-line extractor, there are some very quiet ones around.
