Hi all

Im looking into doing an electrical course and after speaking to an electrician he said the course i need is called:

City and Guilds 236 Part 1 + 2 Practical, Theory + Science.

I contacted South Birmingham College and explained what I was after and they said they I need to do ?

City and Guilds Level 2 2330

As my mate did his 236 course many many years ago am i right in thinking the College course ive seen is basically the same ?

Any help would be much appriciated

Regards

This information your friend has given you is correct just out of date. The 236 part 1 + 2 has been replaced by the 2330 L2 + L3, respectively. You will also need a 2356 NVQ3 and 17th edition to call yourself a fully qualified electrician in the UK. The other important one is the 2391 as a progression after the previous is completed.

Any more questions about this let me know.

Hi Besim10

Thanks for your reply,
I understand i start with the 2330 then progress to L3 then the others you listed.

The 2330 course dont start untill September, and as I work full time I need an evening course.

Does anyone know if there is a 2330 course that starts earlier than September which is in the Birmingham area?

regards

There won't be any with colleges. You could try ringing up, explaining that you're really eager and see if they'll let you try & catch up?

I know of someone who (reckons) he did L2 + L3 in 1 year at his college, whether that's true or not I don't know.

Hi Spakey

I did speak to the college today and they said they are too far into the course to allow me to start now, the students have been studying since September 09

I also asked him if its the same qualifications as some of the "fast track" courses ive seen on the net, he said yes BUT they dont teach you everything you need to know.......how true this is I dont know?

but saying that im in full time work so it would be impossible for me to learn in the day time!,

I've no experience of these 'fast-track' courses, the qualification you want is the 2330. If the training provider offers this, you should theoretically learn the same as you would at college. Theoretically being the key word. You'll learn a LOT more at college/sitting in a class with a tutor. They'll teach you their own way, using their own experience. AFAIK these fast track courses are basically thrown at you & units marked individually. You don't get the chance to use a tester, to see a DB, to see any 'real-life' faults sat at home going through the syllabus.

Exactly what i thought, it would be interesting to hear someone elses opinion on the fast track now.

I did my level 2 "fast-track" with Bridgwater college distance learning. Had it over & done with in under 6 months.

I learnt more in the first fortnight of my level 3 at college part-time than I did the entire level 2 course.

THAT'S where I form my opinions of fast-track! Great if you're in a rush, but I'm fully aware that I missed so much that I would have learnt at college - I spend most of my nights reading my level 2 book, researching different things on the internet, etc, just to make sure I haven't missed anything. I wish I'd done the level 2 at college - it takes longer but you can't beat real teaching from experienced tutors.

I thought about doing fast track, but being unemployed couldn't afford the £3000/£4000 for the course. I am doing 2 nights a week at my local college payed for through JSA. I have found going to college very helpful as when you have a blond moment the other blokes on the course can point you in the right direction, not so when you are at the dining room table trying to concentrate on your books with the kids in the front room fighting over the TV and the wife using the hoover. And at least I get to go out twice a week.
