So far I have been given two quotes, the job entails running cables from the outside CU up the wall into the roof space and dropping down to create a small ring of 4 twin sockets. One wants to use UPC conduit with plastic trunking in the roof space the other wants to use steel conduit clipping the cables to the joists bothe using 2.5mm T&E. The UPC option is cheaper but which one or is there a better way? Thanks

Do you mean a CU in a waterproof cabinet literally outside, or in an outbuilding?
It would be very hard for any of us to comment without seeing the job, as there are often many ways to achieve compliance with the regs as well as doing the job well.
I can only assume that the electrician who quoted you for the steel conduit believes that it may be subject to potential damage. Is this for a small workshop?

Thanks GuitaristNo it's not a workshop my CU is outside the four walls along with the meter. I have had another quote today but this guy has suggested the use of metal trunking using short lengths of conduit around 40 cm between the CU in the brick cupboard and the trunking because the drain pipe is next to the cupboard (there is room for the conduit to go between the wall and the drain pipe). This sounds like a good option as it quote allows room for more at a future date.

I have to admit that I'm having trouble picturing the setup. All I can suggest is that you go with the quote which sounds reasonable, but not too cheap, and which achieves the end goal you require.
Also, check with the prospective electrician that he/she will be issuing you with an Electrical Installation Certificate for the new ring circuit.
