Hi Everyone. I really want to become a fully qualified electrician and have seen some courses. They are all short courses and im not sure if they are worth it. I have been in the building trade for around 6 years and can carry out the basic electrical tasks but im no expert. I know I have to be fully qualified and experienced to carry out electrical work on my own. I have been saving for years to be able to afford one of these courses but dont want to throw my money away.

The course is ÂŁ2500 and takes 4 weeks. Qualifications gained are , Part P VRQ qualification, C&G 2392, 2382 17 edition. Im not silly and dont expect to do the course and be able to do everything an experianced electrician can do, but would this be a good place to start? and are those qualifications all i would need??

Thankyou for reading this very long post, and I would be very greatful for any help anyone can give.

Thanks.

The qualifications you have listed will certify you to work legally with confidence in domestic environments. The price is about right for the courses you are considering.

However if you want to become a fully qualified electrician you will need to do the City and Guilds 2330 L2, L3 and 2356 NVQ3. Adding on the 2382-20 and the 2391 eventually to become a JIB approved electrician.

The 2330 is a much higher qualification than the VRQ2 and will certify you to work in commmercial, industrial and domestic environments. This is the decision you need to make.

A qualified electrician or domestic installer?

Good luck in your research.

Jobs for electricians are few and far between these days and you may find that what ever course you take you may end up with nothing or going self employed.

So when you are pricing out the courses you will also need to budget for transport insurance tools etc for when you pass. Its an uphill struggle from day one.

On the domestic installer route you have to join a scheme that will set you back around ÂŁ300 to ÂŁ500 a megger will set you back ÂŁ600 appx.

Good luck
