Hi everybody !

I just came to live in London one year ago and 7 months ago I started to work in a elder people residence.

I have a basic knowledge of electric work and I know how to make new electrical installations as in my country I use to work as an stage electrician in a theatre.

In this new job in the residence , I would like to make some new installations, for example, to put a movement sensors to activate the light from the toilets, to make a light installation in the garden or install or put some wc fan in the shower or kitchen.

In my country there is only one type of certificate that you can get it in a 2 years course thats it ...but in UK I see that there are a lot of different types of certificates , City and Guilds and to be honest , I m feel really lost about which is the certificate or studies that I have to get to be able to perform this kind of installations.

Somebody could advise me about that??

Which type of certificate I should get to be able to modify and build new electrical installations by law in a residence, asylum or in a homes?

Sorry for my english , I m still learning :)

Thank you very much !!

Also .....if somebody know some cheap and good college around south London to get this certificates it will help me a lot ..

Thanks !!!

in your situation, i would advise employing a qualified, experienced electrician. no matter how good you think you are, if anything went wrong and someone was injured or killed, you'd be inside a jail quicker than you can shout "help".

I have 8 years of experience as an stage electrician in Spain, but for sure , that I know that actually in London I m not able to do electrical jobs, that's the main reason that i didn't touch any electrical installation, and also thats the reason as i would like to enroll a electrician course.

In London I wont "touch" any electrical installation until I get a certificate :)

Thats why I would like know how to do it :)

Fortunately I have lots of experience as a plasterer, Carpenter and also I m able to do small plumbing jobs, painting and gardening but actually I would like to expand my handyman skills and get a electrician certificate.

Ok...I think that I didn't explain myself properly.

1- Actually I m not doing any electrical works because I don't have the electrician certificate in UK.

2- I would like to become a qualified electrician to be able to do electrician works in UK.

3- Which is the certificates or course that I should get to be able to do small electrician jobs in a elder people residence?

:) Thanks !!

the core qualification used to be c&g 2330 level 2 and 3. now i think it's changed it's course code to 2365. takes 3 years. having said that, it's perfectly legal for you to do minor electrical work provided that you are competent. paper qualifications are 1 way of proving competence. so basically, jobs like replacing faulty fittings ( lights, sockets, etc. ) would be no problem as long as you are competent to do so.

most work requires you to issue a certificate. these can be downloaded from the IET website. or if you can buy or borrow a copy of BS7671, model forms are in there.

Thank you for reply .

Then I need ....

- C&G 2365 level 2 Diploma in Electrical Installations (Buildings and Structures)
- C&G 2365 level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installations (Buildings and Structures)

Just few minutes ago, I received a e-mail reply from one electrician school in London, and they tell me that I need :

- 17th edition course
- C&G 2392 Domestic Inspection & Testing

Then, now I m feel more lost than before heheh

what should I do ??

with both "studies plans" I should be able for repair, install, replace and modify electrical installations?

If you have electrical qualifications from Spain then the knowledge base may be transferable over to the UK qualifications, worth checking up on this.
To meet the generally accepted standard of a qualified electrician as Tel says you would need the C&G 2365, with the NVQ3 and AM2 from C&G 2357.
To meet the minimum standard you would need the C&G 2382 (17th Edition Amd 1).

To ensure that you are working legally you MUST, by law, be competent to undertake the work you are doing, this might eventually need to be proven in a court (if things go wrong) and may be done either through paper qualifications or through long term experience.

These are good courses for qualified electricians but not for you because they are add on courses, not the main core.
Dont be tempted, they just want your money.

I have almost the same question like llorenc. Exactly my situation is litle different. I have NVQ 3 and I have excellent experience in electrican job (more than 20 years), also I have valid USA NEC certificate, but I looking for answer which certificate I need for legal work in UK? I no need training.
My question is which certificate I MUST have if I would like to work in UK, and where and how I can get it?
