if so, how does one go around getting qualified to undertake such repairs?

White goods repairs is a simple business: I spend X amount of hours taking apart a washing machine at my hourly rate of Y, plus parts plus delivery, then time to put it all back together...and with my resulting bill Mrs Jones could have bought two brand new ones delivered tomorrow.

Whilst I'm all for recycling and repairing, the economics rarely stack up.
