After a confusing conversation with the Energy Saving Trust advice line who are supposed to be giving impartial advice, but gave me a load of wrong information and were confused about who actually installed insulation I'm back at square one. We have one local firm who install cwi but they are charging customers and I know there's loads of free insulation around. Has anyone had any recent successes getting the job done quickly and for free??

Hmmm, Energy Savings Trust.. I have tried them for advice in the past, and all they seem to tell you is look at the website, The "Which" report was compiled using information from EST and look how inaccurate that was.

Insulation, I too have found this a problem, but your local council should put you in touch with a free or subsidized insulation company, also some of the
big 6 were offering it for free ( and you did not need to be a customer of theirs either)as they were given money which they had to spend (or something like that) on energy improvements.

I understand that subsidies/grants are finishing later this year for insulation so you need to get a wriggle on.

I hope this helps.

That's my issue - if it's only loft it isn't a problem if it's cavity, my curent issue, then the last thing I want to be doing is passing it on to my competitors.

We had the Mark Group knocking on doors round here recently offering it for free

They offer solar as well so you risk losing your client. They knocked on my aunty's house, they were offering Loft insulation which she has had done, and then suggested Solar without even looking at the roof. I'd already gone through this with her before and decided.
A. It wasn't worth it even at cost.
B. It would look awful.
By the time she explained why solar wasn't suitable for her roof i think the sales guy was bored!

SRE would you be interested in undertaking your own loft/cavity/exterior insulation assessments? John Davis has been running FREE CPD events for assessor training. The next one is at the ECO Centre at Peterborough on Wednesday 23[SUP]rd[/SUP] May 0900 for 1000 start, ending at 1300. Please check the Green Deal Energy Assessors page on LinkedIn.

If you attend with current CRB check and passport photo you can be processed for identity card on the same day.

We can arrange training sessions at any location if you can get at least six interested people together.

I have a Wordpress blog detailing energy saving issues and general electrical topics. Please take a look and let me know what you think.

I am working on introducing heating/water pipe insulation service. This can improve heating performance by over 25% and pay back in less than two years.

Please contact me on 07901380746 – 01782504503 or [email protected] if you would like to discuss any of this further.

Just shows what a small world we live in John Davis is an old friend of mine :-) Thanks for the offer I could do this already if I chose to but I prefer to concentrate on building the solar side of things rather than get distracted with insulation.

You could contact John to do your insulation assessments, he's got a borescope for cavity assessments too.

Already got one, used to manage multi-million pound insulation projects and provided consultancy to housing associations, local authorities and small businesses before we did solar. Been in the industry for too many years

Oh and we must be at least 300 miles away....

John may have contacts closer than 300 miles away from you.Good luck and I hope you don’t have any trouble with reinvented double glazingsalespeople and Big Six disguised as independent Green Deal providers!

I've been in contact with a company who are able to offer it for free. I have a contact in one of these organisations that buy carbon credits or something. The insulation company install it, then sell it (claim the installation costs back) to one of these companies who then sell it (as a carbon credit) on to the big 6. Something to do with the big 6 making promises to help reduce emissions?

It's quite widely used as a way of gaining free insulation as far as I am told?

Its CERT, if you really wanted to you could do an insulation survey and sell it on to one of the insulation companies, too much hassle for me I'd rather spend time generating sales but it would be ok for some people.

Surely that means you shouldn't have any trouble finding a company willing to install insulation for free though? or am I missing the point!?>!<>

John has a contact with an insulation Company that covers England and Wales, doesn't do PV and can install within 28 days after survey.

Would half an hour with a survey form help protect your business and offer an additional income. Or have you had enough of surveying etc....

I know it's not core electrical work, but it could help protect your business. You could take someone on as a sub-contractor to undertake all your surveys on a price per job basis. I am sure a few independent DEAs would appreciate the work. The payment from the Installer would pay for your sub-contractor so no cost to you and 100% protection of your PV business.

I am totally committed to small businesses. Many key players are getting ready for the Green Deal. Wwe need to work together to avoid UK PLC putting us all on the dole.

It's a good idea and it's crossed my mind many times and if I'm forced to I will but at the minute we've only had to get 1 cavity wall done out of 5 installations we're doing so I'm hanging on hoping I can ignore it :-)

I'm a bit of a control freak and don't like anyone else going to see my customers, they buy from us because of who we are and the service we provide so introducing someone else gives the customer a potential reason not to go ahead with us and there are too few sales out there at the minute to risk losing a sale.

I know which installer you're talking about, but we had a lot of problems with them when I was running the programmes, things could well have changed now and I am considering contacting them next week, so thanks for reminding me about them.
