Went to look at a job today, customer ( a family friend ) wanted a couple of new sockets.

Checked existing CU and found an old wylex rewireable with no earth. They have had a new head installed and had a meter change done, converted to PME within the past few years. But to my amazement they had brought the earth from the head to a MET and left it at that. No earth connection to the CU.

Now i know it is not there responsibility to connect to CU or to supply an earth in the first place but why should they be allowed to supply one and not at least inform the customer that their install was unsafe?

Every job that we do has to be certificated and paperwork left with the customer, but it seems that these guys don't have to.

Surely we all work to the same Regs, so why not the same paper trail for the install work they do!

chiplard: I'm sure if you quoted the Health & Safety at work Act:1974, they would soon be very interested.......especially the section on "acts and omissions" as this is clearly both!!! They "acted" by altering the incoming services and metering, and they caused an "omission", due to them not informing the householder of the potentially fatal condition of the householders earth potential!!!
